October, 2014, and the closing ceremony on October

22 was the occasion to share the outcomes of the

interventions, lessons learnt and way forward. Findings

of the UTech, Jamaica Cares online survey which was

conducted among UTech, Jamaica, staff and students

in September 2014 revealed that nearly 80% of the

respondents had a positive view of the Project.

THE UBUNTU PRINCIPLE – ‘I AM BECAUSE YOU ARE’

Following the Essence of Humanity Awards, the

concept of Ubuntu was embraced, as being completely

aligned with the University’s 40-odd year old

commitment to community service. The Division led the

establishment of an Ubuntu Group to achieve early and

effective stakeholder participation in the development

of a core strategy around the Ubuntu philosophy, and to

address and identify potential options for infusing the

philosophy into University life.

To this end a retreat and planning workshop held

in December 2014, under the theme: “Ubuntu –

An Approach to Rethinking Community Service

and Development at UTech, Jamaica” provide an

opportunity for careful reflection of the aims and

objectives of the Ubuntu Group and plan activities for

2015. The meeting also provided an opportunity for

outstanding CSP students, CSP tutors, and members

of the Ubuntu Group to deepen their understanding of

how to use UBUNTU to improve community service

and development.

Community Development and Engagement

In the area of community development, the work of the

division continued to impact several key communities,

including Hope Tavern, Irish Town, and other

communities in the Papine Development Area, as well

as other communities such as Mountain View, Harbour

View, Browns Town, amongst others.

Stakeholders’ consultations continued on the
