DIVISION OF COMMUNITY SERVICE AND

DEVELOPMENT

The Division of Community Service and Development

has the critical role of facilitating service learning and

community development and service. The division also

institutional support to community initiatives and

undertaking innovative community initiatives with

national and international impact.

In addition, the division serves the University over

10,000 undergraduates, who during their first year, are

provided with service opportunities to complement

their academic experience. The department is the

“voice” of the university in the community which

includes the non-Papine campus locations in Kingston,

Montego Bay and the CSP1001 programme in the

Community Colleges who conduct university franchise

programmes.

“UTECH CARES” Project

The division continued to implement the UTech,

Jamaica Cares Project, which had commenced in

September 2013, with grant funding from the USAID.

This project was implemented as a follow up to an

EU-supported initiative aimed at expanding the limits

of tolerance and respect at

UTech, Jamaica following an incidence of mob violence.

With three major components, of i) improving attitudes;

ii) integrating core values; and iii) building awareness,

related to respect, tolerance and diversity, as well as to

strengthen the role of the protection of human rights

in society. The main outputs of the project were as

follows:

• Song on Respect and Tolerance - written by Mr

Coswell Duncan (UTech, Jamaica Music Tutor) and

Mr Grub Cooper ( Musician)

• Bookmarker Project – bookmakers designed with

a message inspired by the theme “Respect and

Tolerance for Diversity”

• Seminars on Stigma and Discrimination

• Publication of twenty (20) student articles
