The Faculty of Engineering and Computing’s Strategic
Plan for the academic year 2014/2015 focused
on consolidation of programmes and expanding
international partnerships with other universities.
Evidence of the success of this drive is the fact that for
the last two years FENC students have distinguished
themselves by being at the top tier of the graduating
class in academic performance and leadership. New
courses of study were also developed to fulfill UTech,
Jamaica’s vision of satisfying national and regional
labour force demands.
School of Engineering (SOE)
Aviation Programme
Development of an aviation programme in the School
of Engineering is underway and scheduled to start
in academic year 2016/17. The programme will
include Airport Management, Aerospace and Aircraft
Maintenance Engineering.
School of Computing and Information Technology (SCIT)
Bachelor’s Degree in Animation
The proposal for the Bachelor in Animation Production
and Development was approved by the Board of
Undergraduate Studies (BUS) at their sitting on
Thursday February 12, 2015. The School of Computing
and Information Technology is scheduled to commence
offering this programme in academic year 2015/16.
SCIT Lecturers Win International Tracer F.I.R.E. Security
Forensic Hackathon Challenge
Three lecturers from the School of Computing and
Information Technology (Dr Sean Thorpe, Senior
Lecturer, Mr Kedrian James, Lecturer and Mr Rohan
Malcolm, Assistant Lecturer) emerged winners at
the prestigious Tracer F.I.R.E. (Forensic and Incident
Response Exercise) Security Forensic Hackathon
Challenge held December 8–9, 2014, in Louisiana, New
Orleans, USA. Tracer FIRE is a programme developed
by Sandia and Los Alamos National Laboratories to
educate and train cyber security incident responders
(CSIRs) and analysts in critical skill areas, and to
improve collaboration and teamwork.
The UTech, Jamaica team designated, “The Avengers,”
won with 37 points after two consecutive days of
gruelling hands-on competition outstripping their
closest rival, Team USA, who earned 35 points.
SCIT Leads Research with University of North Carolina to
Advance Research and Development Capacity in Informa-
tion Security
The Computational Science Research group from the
School of Computing and Information Technology
(SCIT) participated in a joint research project with
the University of North Carolina (UNC), Chapel Hill,
USA. The research project was underwritten by a
Research Development Fund (RDF) grant awarded by
Prof. Nilza Smith
