UTech, Jamaica hosted the first Summer Programme

in Robotics and Renewable Energy for high school

students (UTech, Ja. /Kimroy Bailey Robotics

Summer Camp). The one-week Science, Robotics

and Renewable Energy Summer camp was designed

to enhance the students’ knowledge of the practical

applications of Science, Technology, Engineering and

Mathematics (STEM) while providing them with an

exciting hands-on learning experience.

Sixty-three (63) students participated in the summer

camp which ran in two sessions from July 7-11 and

July 21-25, with a closing ceremony held at UTech,

Jamaica’s Papine campus, on July 25, 2014. The

participants benefitted

from instructions on how

to build and assemble a

mobile robotic platform

and the link between

renewable energy and

robotics, as well as how

these can be integrated

for national development.

Kimroy Bailey (left) explains to Hon.

Julian Robinson, Minister of State in

the Ministry of Science, Technology,

Energy and Mining how one of

the mobile robotics built by camp

participants’ works. The robot was

programmed to move away from

obstacles and follow an infrared

light to obtain solar charge.

Entrepreneurial Ventures

Project management and short courses provided a

significant income stream for the Faculty.
