The Faculty of Education and Liberal Studies through
the School of Technical and Vocational Education
(SOTAVE), produces teachers and trainers in technical
specializations of the highest quality. SOTAVE offers
programmes in Family and Consumer Studies,
Industrial Technology and Business and Computer
Studies. In addition, through the School of Humanities
and Social Sciences (SHSS) formerly the Department
of Liberal Studies (DoLS), the Faculty provides
learning experiences that foster critical and creative
thinking, a heightened awareness and practice of
professionalism, and the development of skills in
effective communication and social learning.
School Of Technical and Vocational Education (SOTAVE)
In the continuing process of ‘revisioning’ the role and
effectiveness of the School of Technical and Vocational
Education the administration has accepted the primacy
of STEM to modern education, particularly in preparing
graduates for work in a global marketplace.
Consequently, a team has been comprised to explore
SOTAVE’s emerging role in STEM education. The
members of the team are Professor Simon Yalams,
Drs. Shermaine Barrett, Gareth Phillips, Leonie Clarke,
and Mrs Anita Thomas-James. The team is led by Dr
Phillips.
Accreditation
The undergraduate programmes in the SOTAVE,
Bachelor of Education in Technical and Vocational
Education and Training (TVET) in FCS, BCS and
Industrial Technology were re-accredited by the UCJ.
The MSc in Workforce Education and Development (M.
Sc. WED) was also re-accredited.
Teaching Practicum Exercises 2014-2015
Approximately one hundred and thirty-seven (137)
students participated in the final year teaching practice
exercise across sixty-three (63) schools in eight
parishes. The exercises ran from January 5 – March
27, 2015. Students of the Industrial Technology
programme have been practicing in the classrooms at
the Papine High School since October, 2014.
Pilot Project for Business Education and Entrepreneurship
in Secondary Schools
An initiative to promote a culture of entrepreneurship
in secondary schools spearheaded by Mrs Vivia Clarke,
programme director for Business and Computer Studies
in collaboration with the First Heritage Co-operative
Credit Union (FHCCU) and Caribbean Airlines was
launched on Wednesday, June 4, 2014 at the UTech,
Jamaica Papine campus. Five schools were selected
for the pilot project. The initiative aims to strengthen
secondary school students’ performance in business
subjects at the Caribbean Secondary Education (CSEC)
level, by setting up and running a business.
