Heritage Co-operative Credit Union, the major sponsor,
presented FELS with a cheque for $500,000 toward
the venture. In September 2014, the schools, Excelsior
High, Dunoon Technical, Norman Manley High, Oberlin
High and Haile Selassie High, were each given $100,
000 to start a business of their choice. Business
education students were the target group. Ms. Deliah
Bennett, Marketing Manager, Caribbean Airlines
presented airline tickets to be used as part of the prizes
to the winning school.

FELS Supports “Mission Catwalk”
The fashion design and management programme
received much exposure from the filming of the popular
Mission Catwalk season in the FELS clothing laboratory
in July. The promotion of the fashion designing
programme (ADPM) received a further boost at the
final show of Mission Catwalk on November 15, 2014.
The Programme also benefitted from a donation of
two air conditioning units which were installed at the
clothing laboratory.
The winner of the competition was awarded a
scholarship to pursue studies in fashion designing at
UTech, Jamaica in the ADPM programme.

Mathematics Education at UTech, Jamaica
In May 2014, a team of senior UTech, Jamaica Faculty
including Professor Colin Gyles, Drs Rohan Lewis
and Leonie Clarke and Mr Afis Ismail met with Dr
Tameka Benjamin, National Mathematics Coordinator
in the Ministry of Education to discuss establishing a
leadership role for UTech, Jamaica in math education.
Dr Benjamin committed to involving UTech, Jamaica
representatives in key areas such as the National
Math Advisory Committee and in discussions on math
education.
FCS Conference 2015
The Family and Consumer Studies Programme in
the School of Technical and Vocational Education
successfully hosted their 12th Annual conference on
February 20, 2015, under the theme “Reinforcing
Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics
(STEM) principles through the Home Economics
Curriculum”. Eighteen schools from across the island
participated in this conference.
The keynote speaker Dr Wayne Wesley, Executive
Director for HEART Trust/NTA, highlighted the
approach to STEM integration and its connections to
varying disciplines.
