Student Achievements/Awards
In November 2014, the first batch of seventeen
(17) nursing students graduated from the franchise
programme offered through the St Vincent and the
Grenadines Community College. An additional twenty
(20) students are expected to graduate in 2015
UTech Pharmacy Alumni
The UTech Pharmacy Alumni (UPA) continued to be a
major and reliable source of support for the School of
Pharmacy. Both the UPA and the Caribbean Institute
of Pharmacy Policy Practice (CIPPPAR) continued to
provide assistance for needy pharmacy students.
Enhancing Health Care Training Across the Caribbean
Through the use of distance technologies, the College
continued to expand access to its courses of study to
prospective students within and outside of Jamaica.
Through this initiative the College has maintained its
top place position on the University’s list of having the
greatest number of international students enrolled in its
programmes.
The continued use of online/blended modalities has
resulted in the enrolment of students in the Bahamas,
Anguilla, Barbados, St Lucia, St Vincent and the
Grenadines, Barbados, Canada, Antigua and Belize.
Collaboration with the Organization of American States
Since late 2012, the College has been involved in a drug
demand reduction project funded by the Organization of
American States/ Inter-American Drug Abuse Control
Commission (OAS/CICAD). The Project involves
building capacity among the UTech community through
workshops that cover drug abuse prevention education,
policy development, addiction and treatment.
To date, several workshops aimed at sensitizing persons
on the misuse of drugs have been hosted jointly with
the National Council on Drug Abuse. The Caribbean
Poison information Network has also assisted through
the hosting of some public education seminars in
schools.
The Wellness and Welfare Initiative
For the period under review, the College’s Wellness
and Welfare Committee responded to the Chik V and
Zika Virus outbreaks with a number of public awareness
bulletins. These bulletins assisted staff members
as well as external persons in identifying symptoms
associated with the viruses and seeking the relevant
medical support.
