2013 Jamaica Report to Hon. Anthony Hylton, MP, Minister of Industry,
Investment and Commerce who was keynote speaker on day one of the
2-day conference on entrepreneurship hosted by the College, June 25
and 26, 2014 at the Jamaica Conference Centre, Kingston. Sharing in the

Policies Industry, Canada, Dr. Michelle Black, GEM Team Leader, Mr.
Orville Reid, Lecturer, COBAM, Dr. Girjanauth Boodraj, Lecturer, COBAM, Dr.
Claudette Williams Myers, Associate Dean, COBAM, Mr. Michael Steele,
Head, Joan Duncan School of Entrepreneurship, Ethics and Leadership
(JDSEEL) and Dr. Rodrigo Varela, Director, GEM Caribbean.
The annual Business Model Competition commenced
on September 29, 2014 with over 25 teams. Following
several elimination rounds six (6) teams entered the
finals. The competition received sponsorship to the
tune of $1,385,000.00. From the Business Model
Competition, the two top placed teams represented
UTech, Jamaica at the national finals of the Business
Model Competition held on March 24th and 25th,
2015 at the Jamaica Conference Centre. UTech,
Jamaica’s entrants placed second, and fourth.
Global Entrepreneurship Week was celebrated
from November 17 – 22, 2014. The School and the
Incubator showcased three events this year. They
included Global Entrepreneurship Monitor (GEM)
presentation; discover the Entrepreneur in You and
UTech, Jamaica Business Model Boot Camp.
Student Achievements
The 20th Annual Students’ Conference organized
and hosted by the final year students of the School
of Business Administration was held in both Kingston
and Montego Bay. This is the largest student
organized conference in the Caribbean.
Chris-Ann Thomas was awarded the JNBS
Foundation Legacy Scholarship to the University of
Birmingham to pursue postgraduate studies.
Renae Reid, a final year Marketing student was
the recipient of the 2014 George Phillips Memorial
Scholarship. She was honoured at Kings House on
Thursday, May 29, 2014 at the Jamaica Institute of
Management Awards Ceremony.
SHTM Culinary Major Graduate, Theo Smith
was among the twenty-three outstanding young
Jamaicans and two youth groups who were awarded
the 2013 Prime Minister’s Youth Award for Excellence
at a ceremony held at Jamaica House, Kingston, on
April 6, 2014 under the theme: ‘Celebrating Jamaican
Youth. The Courage of Perseverance’
