Staffing

Total full-time staffing at March 2015 stood at 1393

persons as follows: 546 Academic, 550 Administrative,

179 Technical, and 118 Ancillary Staff,

Training

A total of 58 staff received tuition waivers to pursue

qualification upgrades. In the same period, 80

dependents of staff received tuition waivers to

undertake undergraduate programmes offered by

UTech, Jamaica. Thirty (30) staff members received

support to pursue short courses at UTech, Jamaica and

361 staff participated in workshops facilitated by HR.

Staff also benefitted from 115 training opportunities

locally and overseas at conferences/seminars/

workshops.

Pension

With regard to the matter of retiring benefits for staff

members of the University who were employed during

the period September 1, 1995 to March 31, 2008 and

who were not covered by any pension arrangement,

the Cabinet approved the proposals that would allow

all employees of the University of Technology, Jamaica

appointed during the period September 1, 1995 to

March 31, 2008 and who were not covered by any

pension arrangement to be eligible for retiring benefits

in accordance with the Pensions Act and the Pensions

(Teachers) Act.

Senior Academic Appointments

Senior Academic appointments made during the period

included the appointment of a Deputy President.

Following a robust recruitment exercise which

considered both internal and external applicants,

Professor Colin Gyles, former Dean of the Faculty of

Science and Sport emerged as the successful candidate

and was appointed to office effective January 5, 2015.

The University Appointments and Promotions

Committee also approved a number of other

appointments which were ratified by Council and these

included the appointment of a Dean of the Faculty of

Law, Vice Deans of the Faculties of Engineering and

Computing and Education and Liberal Studies, and the

re-appointment of a Vice Dean in the College of Health

Sciences. New Heads of Schools appointments

were made in the School of Architecture, Building

and Land Management, and Hospitality and Tourism

Management. There were two re-appointments of

Heads of Schools for Humanities and Social Sciences

and Technical and Vocational Education.

Staff Recognition

The 44th University Annual Awards Ceremony was held

on May 9, 2014. The Ceremony was the culmination of

Staff Development and Appreciation Week which was

convened under the theme “Overcoming Challenges,

Sustaining Excellence”. One hundred and thirty-four

(134) employees were recognized for their service
