executed in spite of some difficulties with scheduling

and participation. UTech, Jamaica’s Duainne Miller was

the winner of the Men singles title.

UWI/UTech, Jamaica Sports Championship

The UWI/UTech, Jamaica Sports Championship was

held at UWI, Mona Bowl on September 20, 2014. Of

the seven (7) sporting events in which the universities

competed, UTech, Jamaica emerged winner in three –

Cricket, Female Football and Rugby while UWI won in

Netball, Female Volleyball, Male Football and Basketball

which earned them the overall 2014 champions.

The Sports Championship committee decided to

associate the championship event with an outreach

project at the Shalom Basic School in August Town, St

Andrew which served as a prelude to the competition.

Supporters from both universities, including student

athletes, came out in their numbers to participate in

the outreach project. They painted the walls, swept

the yard, cleaned and organized the classrooms and

made donations of white boards to the school. The

day’s activities attracted a crowd of more than 5000

supporters and ended with an integration party.

collaborative effort between the City of Miramar and

UTech, Jamaica.

SPORTS FACILITY USAGE

UTech, Jamaica’s sporting facilities accommodated

various sporting and non-sporting activities by internal

and external users. However, the level of usage was

affected by drought conditions and infrastructure work

taking place on the Papine campus. A major challenge

was lack of adequate funding to address maintenance

and repair needs. Notwithstanding, revenue of

approximately $4.5 M was generated from the rental of

the facility.. A total of 195 applications were received

for the use of the various areas of the sports facilities.

Closure of Swimming Pool

The swimming pool was closed from mid July to

August 2014 as part of University’s water conservation

strategy due to the prolonged drought condition which

affected the entire country. The closure resulted in a

loss of potential income from summer camp activities.

Community Outreach

The Department of Sport contributes to the

University’s Community Service outreach programme

by way of providing access to the University sporting

and recreational facilities for training purposes and

competition. The following community groups and
