Kingsley Chin to Deliver Keynote Address at UTech, Jamaica’s Research, Technology and Innovation Day
Dr. Kingsley Chin
Dr. Kingsley Chin, USA-based Jamaican orthopaedic surgeon, inventor and entrepreneur, who has leveraged his degrees in engineering and medicine with his business experience to found several enterprises, will deliver the keynote address at the Opening Ceremony of the University of Technology, Jamaica’s annual Research, Technology and Innovation Day (RTID).
The University’s annual Research, Technology and Innovation Day is scheduled for Thursday, March 8, 2018 from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm at the brand new Shared Facilities Building on the Papine Campus.
Dr. Chin’s unique career in healthcare technology has spanned over 28 years. In 2000 he launched the first Internet based healthcare distance learning company, MeduWeb.com (Medical Education on the Web) which was founded with two MIT software engineers.
With his invention of medical devices, Dr. Chin started several more healthcare companies including Mantis Inc., a less invasive pedicle screw technology company which he sold to Stryker in a multimillion dollar deal in 2005. He later founded KICVentures – a private investment company.
Dr. Chin was educated at Columbia University, Harvard Medical School, the University of Pennsylvania, and is a graduate of Titchfield High School in Portland. The highly acclaimed spine surgeon, holder of over 40 patents, and serial entrepreneur has received acclaim for Prove Yourself: Life and Business Lessons for Success, a book about his journey from boyhood in Buff Bay, Portland, filled with lessons that inspire.
The one-day research and innovation showcase at UTech, Jamaica, is in line with the University’s 60th anniversary celebrations being held under the theme: “Pioneering Past; Bright Future: Six Decades of Impactful Research and Scholarly Achievements,” and will feature cutting-edge and applied research being undertaken by staff and students across the University’s five faculties and three colleges.
The objectives of UTech, Jamaica’s Research Technology and Innovation Day are to showcase recent results of research activities undertaken by faculty members and students; demonstrate the facilities within the various units and other resources that are available to conduct research; highlight existing research collaborations between the university, academic, and industry partners; attract potential research partners from academia and industry and to promote the university’s courses of study, especially graduate research degrees.
The day’s activities will include College/Faculty exhibits and tours as well as a Speakers’ Forum from 12:00 noon to 5:00 pm, featuring presentations on current high impact research and innovation being pursued in the many areas in which the university teaches and researches.
