A team in the College of Health Sciences (COHS) comprising academic and technical staff has used its expertise in the development and production of a hand sanitizer formulation to contribute to the University’s efforts to mitigate the spread of COVID-19. The selected formulation for the hand sanitizer has been adapted from the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Center for Disease Control (CDC). Mrs. Tieca Harris Kidd, Project Manager, explained that the alcohol-based hand sanitizer contains 70% ethyl alcohol, along with glycerine, hydrogen peroxide and purified water and meets the recommended standards of the WHO and CDC, which stipulates use of a sanitizer that contains at least 60% alcohol in the absence of soap and water. The COHS-produced hand sanitizer has saved the University the cost of purchasing the item at the average retail price. Students Shine at Sagicor Innovation Challenge UTech, Ja. I nnovation and ingenuity were on full show at the final round of the Sagicor Jamaica Innovation Challenge among University of Technology, Jamaica students held on July 24, 2020 at the Jamaica Pegasus Hotel, Kingston. Nine teams of students drawn from the University’s colleges and faculties, pitched their technology-based innovations before a panel of judges comprising lectures from the School of Computing and Information Technology (SCIT) and from Sagicor leadership.
