MSc. in Information Systems Management

Program Overview

The Master of Science in Information Systems Management intends to produce information systems professionals with specialized skills to manage current and emerging technologies and processes that will be used to support and direct organizational strategic mandates. It will provide students with a dynamic and innovative approach to learn and apply the knowledge and skills needed to become well-rounded practitioners in the IS discipline. It also aims to produce graduates that exhibit critical thinking, sound decision-making and problem-solving competencies within organizations, particularly relating to the management of information systems.

Specializations

There are four (4) specializations within the MSc.ISM each carrying 12 credits. These are

-          Enterprise Security

-          Database Management

-          Project Management

-          Software Engineering

Enterprise Security specialization focuses on providing students with the requisite skills, knowledge and techniques to be equipped to manage/advise on information security management decisions in organizations.

Database Management specialization will focus on providing students with the requisite skills, knowledge and techniques to be equipped to manage/advise on the effective and efficient development, maintenance and security of organizational databases.

Project Management specialization focuses on providing students with the requisite skills, knowledge and techniques to be equipped to manage/advise on organizational IT project management activities.

Software Engineering specialization focuses on providing students with the requisite skills, knowledge and techniques to become equipped to manage/advise on software product development activities in organizations. 

Entry Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Information Technology/Information Systems/Computer Science or other related discipline with a minimum GPA of 2.7 from UTech or other approved institutions or Mature Entry (conditions apply). Effective academic year 2022/23, admission will be granted to prospective students who are holders of Level 5 MVQ Certificate which is equivalent to a bachelor’s degree.
  • A minimum of two (2) years working experience is preferred.

 Prior Learning Assessment

Prospective applicants for the MSc.ISM who do not meet the standard requirements for matriculation may matriculate through Prior Learning Assessment (PLA). PLA is an assessment system used to assess the competencies that applicants or students have acquired through formal and informal education and the world of work.

 Duration and Delivery

The normal duration of this course of study is 18 months part-time. Classes are delivered in a modular format (i.e. one module every 3-5 weeks depending on the credit weighting).

Students are expected to select one of these specializations. Note that the specializations offered in an academic year are subject to demand.
