RESEARCH MANAGEMENT

President’s Research Initiative Award, 2014

Dr. Sean Thorpe (right), Graduate Programme Director, School of Computing

and Information Technology in the Faculty of Engineering and Computing

beams with pride as he accepts the President’s Award for Excellence in

Research from Mr. Vivian Crawford, OD, Pro-Chancellor, UTech.

“The President’s Research Initiative Award” is the

University’s most prestigious award in recognition

of individual initiative aimed at promoting research

excellence at the University. The 2014 recipient was

Dr Sean Thorpe, Lecturer in the School of Computing

and Information Technology, Faculty of Engineering and

Computing who also has the distinction of being the

University’s first PhD graduate.

To date, Dr Thorpe has written 20 peer-reviewed

conference papers, and nine peer-reviewed journal

articles. His research, recognized and cited by

international organisations such as the Association of

Computing Machinery (ACM), Institute of Electronics,

Electrical Engineers (IEEE) and the Lecture Notes in

Computer Science (LNCS), has been focused on the

areas of Cloud Computing, Digital Forensics, Data

Mining and Information Security and has included the

introduction of a new sub field referred to as Cloud

Computing Log Forensics. He has filed one local and

one international patent from his research.

Research Development Fund (RDF)

Internal funding support for research continues to be

provided through the Research Development Fund

(RDF), managed by the SGSRE. During the period

under review, 17 applications were received for funding.

CARIBBEAN RESEARCH and INNOVATION

MANAGEMENT ASSOCIATION (CabRIMA)

CabRIMA is the professional body for research and

innovation management practitioners in the Caribbean

region (

www.CabRIMA.org)

. The SGSRE continues to

be the Secretariat for the Association. During the period

under review, CabRIMA members participated in

capacity building workshops hosted by UTech, Jamaica

and in benchmarking surveys covering innovation,

knowledge transfer, entrepreneurship, and related

thematic areas.

Research Grant Proposals

The University’s involvement in six (6) European Union

co-funded projects (one as project leader, and five as

a partner) continued during the period under review.

The areas covered by these projects include intellectual

property, innovation, entrepreneurship, knowledge

transfer, renewable energy, and climate change.

Research, Technology and Innovation Day

Mr. Kimroy Bailey, Robotics Innovator, renewable energy advocate and

alumnus, demonstrates the functionalities of his innovation, the Bailey

Botics Robotics Kit, tailored as a learning tool for high school student. The

device has capabilities for programming, testing and troubleshooting. Bailey

was keynote presenter at UTech’s Research, Technology and Innovation Day

held on Thursday, March 12, 2015 at the Alfred Sangster auditorium, UTech

Papine campus.
