The shortage of classroom furniture at Jamaica College has been eased with the loan of 100 desk/chair combination units by University of Technology, Jamaica to its neigbouring educational institution, Jamaica College.
Mrs. Genefa Hibbert, Vice President and Chief Operations and Projects Officer, explained at a presentation at Jamaica College on Wednesday, May 4, 2022 that the loan was made following an appeal for assistance, and will be extended for six months. She noted that the University, under its UTech, Jamaica Enhancement Project, had previously purchased five hundred chairs, and the loan was made out of the excess that remained in storage.
Mr. Wayne Robinson, Acting Principal, Jamaica College, in expressing gratitude to UTech, Jamaica, noted that with the resumption of all classes at the institution, the need for adequate furniture became an emergency. “Over the last two years, we weren’t seeing the need because the students weren’t on the compound,” he explained, adding that “since we have come back face to face, the need is glaring.”
The Principal indicated that the units loaned by UTech, Jamaica have been placed in several first form classrooms. “We still have issues, of course, but we're making the best use of what we have,” he expressed, noting that general wear and tear of furniture is an issue for all educational institutions that needs constant attention.
