BEng. in Civil Engineering
Civil Engineering Philosophy Statement
Civil engineering is one of the oldest of the engineering professions. Civil engineers, for many centuries, have been helping people throughout the world planning, designing, constructing and maintaining many components of the basic infrastructure on which they depend such as bridges, buildings, dams, airports, foundations, highways, power plants, water and wastewater facilities and other civil structures. The design and construction of these systems are only part of the many challenges and opportunities faced by civil engineers. The recent revolution in computers, communications and data management has provided new resources that are widely used by the professional civil engineer in providing safe, economical and functional facilities to serve our society.
The need for civil engineers in any society and especially Jamaica can be diagnosed by inspecting the infrastructure available to its citizens. Civil engineering satisfies those that have an interest in the technical aspects of engineering or prefer to develop an interest in the business world. Civil engineering is a career path that offers a broad array of career possibilities and can easily blend with other areas of study. In the end, the Bachelor of Engineering in Civil Engineering will offer direct pathways to exciting and service-oriented careers.
The curriculum is designed to provide an educational programme of basic and specialized engineering knowledge necessary for its graduates to be proficient in recognized specialties of civil engineering, namely, Construction, Structural Engineering and Environmental Engineering. The approximately 130-credit course of study leads to a Bachelor of Engineering in Civil Engineering. This preparation provides graduates with the tools needed for successful practice in the period following graduation and helps to prepare them for eventual licensure as Professional Engineers. In addition to general and technical education, the educational programme stresses professional and ethical responsibilities, an awareness of societal issues, and the need for life-long learning.
The course of study is focused on meeting goals that directly impact the vitality of the Jamaican economy, which will be increasingly focused on energy, sustainability, manufacturing and fabrication. By preparing more people with knowledge and skill to effectively manage technological advancements and scarce resources, Jamaican firms will be more innovative and productive, better able to compete in the global economy, and better able to adapt to changes such as the convergence of engineering and sciences in manufacturing.
