DATA PROTECTION OFFICER
The University of Technology, Jamaica (UTech, Jamaica) seeks to identify a suitable candidate to fill the following post:
DATA PROTECTION OFFICER
(LEVEL 11)
Description
Reporting to the President, the Data Protection Officer (DPO) will be responsible for overseeing the University's Data Privacy Programme and help shape the privacy strategy (privacy planning, policies, processes and improvement initiatives) of the University. The DPO will also lead across departmental boundaries to assure compliance with relevant policies and the university's legal, regulatory and compliance obligations.
The DPO will provide specialist advice and support to the university's senior management, will work closely with key internal stakeholders such as Legal, ICT, Planning, and Marketing and Communications, and manage relationships with key external stakeholders.
Requirements:
The preferred applicant should possess:
- MSc Information Security, Computer Science, Information Technology, Data Privacy, Law, or a related field.
OR
- Bachelor's Degree an IT related field with:
At least one (1) International Association of Privacy Professionals (IAPP) certifications:
- - Certified Information Privacy Professional (CIPP)
- - Certified Information Privacy Manager (CIPM)
- - Certified Information Privacy Technologist (CIPT)
OR
At least one (1) ISACA certification in governance and risk management:
- - Certified in Risk and Information Systems Control (CRISC)
- - Certified in Governance of Enterprise IT (CGEIT)
- - Certified Information Security Manager (CISM)
Relevant Experience
At least 3-5 years' work experience in Privacy, Compliance, Information Security, Auditing, or a relevant field (Finance, Law, Business Administration, Information Technology)
Experience in the following areas is an asset:
- - mapping/understanding business processes and data handling needs in a relevant/related industry
- - higher education industry, as well as data processing
- - cybersecurity - dealing with real security incidents, risk assessments, countermeasures and data protection impact assessments.
Required Skills
- Knowledge of existing local and regional and other relevant data protection laws; drafting of policies and other agreements.
- Practical knowledge of IT systems, infrastructures and the relevant security measures needed for data protection and privacy.
- Knowledge of new technologies and potential risks they present to data safety.
- Ability to work well under pressure and manage sensitive and confidential information.
- Great interpersonal skills and ability to work well both independently and as part of a team.
Key Duties and Responsibilities
- Develops and implement monitoring frameworks to ensure compliance with relevant University privacy policies, data protection laws and regulations.
- Leads the development, implementation, monitoring and reporting of compliance reports regarding data protection with training requirements of the University.
- Promotes privacy / data protection awareness and conduct awareness/sensitization sessions for all internal stakeholders.
- Promotes a culture of data protection compliance across all units of the University.
- Oversees and guide the implementation of Data Protection / Privacy by Design or Defaults (not restricted to electronic systems) at the University.
- Oversees the maintenance of accurate and comprehensive records of all personal data processing activities undertaken by, or on behalf of, the University.
