The University of Technology, Jamaica seeks to identify an experienced professional to fill the position of:

DEAN – FACULTY OF LAW

The Faculty of Law offers the Bachelor of Laws (LLB) degree at the Papine and Montego Bay Campuses of the University. Taught by a cadre of lawyers, some with interdisciplinary training and experience, the LLB programme is delivered in both morning and evening sessions to both full and part-time students. The Faculty also conducts a Legal Advice Centre where senior students get hands-on experience under the supervision of experienced practitioners.

POSITION DESCRIPTION:

The Dean is the chief academic and administrative officer within the Faculty reporting directly to the Deputy President. The incumbent has responsibility for providing the leadership and educational vision for managing, marketing and advancing the Faculty's mission of teaching, research and service including long range planning and assessment. The Dean represents the Faculty on relevant Boards and Committees within and outside the University.

MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE POSITION ARE TO:

· Provide general academic management oversight on the University's undergraduate and postgraduate courses of study, working in conjunction with Faculty Boards of Studies and the Academic Board.

· Implement and monitor financial and resource policies in keeping with the University's regulations.

· Provide direction and supervision for Faculty hiring and in making recommendations for their appointment and/or re-appointment.

· Participate in the promotion and tenure processes for the Faculty.

· Act on behalf of the University in such matters as may be delegated by the President and Deputy President, Academic Affairs as required.

· Supervise the operation of the Faculty's administrative systems, devolving tasks to Heads of School/Department and staff within the Faculty.

· Allocate work, through Heads of School/Department and Faculty Administrator, setting targets and ensuring that work is satisfactorily completed and within deadlines.

· Ensure that procedures and processes are in place to facilitate student recruitment, and enrolment, facilitate progression and graduation eligibility.

· Work with the Marketing and Communications Departments for the marketing and promotion of the Faculty's academic programmes, research interests and outreach activities.

· Maintain outside contacts, and building relationships with key client groupings.

IDEALLY, THE CANDIDATE SHOULD:

1. Have a minimum of a LLM Degree but preferably a PhD or equivalent professional qualification from a recognized University.

2. normally be at the rank of Professor

3. have at least six to eight (6-8) years' experience in a senior capacity with relevant teaching and/or research experience

4. possess a proven record of academic administrative management with progressive levels of responsibility;

5. have the ability to promote leadership and vision and effectively lead collaborative change; and

6. demonstrate a strong commitment to student-centred learning, rigorous academic standards and to promoting an innovative teaching and learning environment.

TERMS OF APPOINTMENT

Initial appointment will be for 4 years with provision for re- appointment.

REMUNERATION

Compensation will be in accordance with University's policy and guidelines
