CONFERENCE MESSAGE

CSON In describing the important role of nursing and midwifery in research, the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (2014) stated “Nurses have been leading health care innovations since the dawn of the profession. They have ushered in broad-scale changes in areas ranging from better hygiene practices for wounded soldiers to public health visits to overcrowded urban homes to reproductive health services for women”. It is the constant quest for innovation in nursing and midwifery practice that the Caribbean School of Nursing, University of Technology, Jamaica, brings together researchers from nursing and collaborating disciplines to share current evidence in the health and welfare of people.

The Caribbean School of Nursing, UTech welcomes all to this 4th biennial Nursing and Midwifery Research Conference to be held August 8 - 9, 2019 under the theme “Promoting Healthy Aging through Nursing and Midwifery Research.” The theme of the conference supports the all-inclusive United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goals which address poverty alleviation among older people, health, gender equality and economic growth. It is expected that the presentations will provide new evidence and insight intended to improve the health and welfare of older people.

Presenters will be from Jamaica, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, the Philippines, Colombia, Canada and the United States of America. Research types will be qualitative, quantitative and systematic reviews. The wide cross-section of presenters and attendees will allow for the generation of robust discussion and opportunities for inter-professional research projects and networking..

The scientific sessions will be arranged based on themes and will include the following, “The prevalence of asthma and allergies among the elderly in Jamaica: The relationship with smoking;” “How effective are advanced practice nurses (APNs) when providing care for older adults?” “Correlates of pelvic floor disorders in women fifty years and over attending out-patient gynaecology and urology clinics at a tertiary hospital in Kingston and St Andrew, Jamaica”. "The perception of persons 60 years and older, in the Georgetown community, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, regarding access to health care;" and “Predictors of health service utilization among older men in Jamaica”.

The goal of the conference is to provide a forum for scholars and emerging scholars to disseminate their research and to develop partnerships among academic and professionals for exposure to the global perspectives on nursing and midwifery
