21 May - August 2021 | VOICES Bi-Monthly Magazine of the University of Technology, Jamaica BSc ChAD, COHS Students Engaged in COIL Initiative with Humber College Students enrolled in the BSc Child and Adolescent Development course of study who are pursuing the Disability Minor took part in a COIL (Collaborative Online International Learning Activity) with Humber Lakeshore Campus College in Semester 2, Academic Year 2020/2021. COIL is an innovative way for students to engage in global dialogue across their disciplines. The two major objectives of COIL initiatives are to provide students with the opportunity to develop relationships with people in another nation and to give faculty the opportunity to enliven the classroom experience for students. The UTech, Jamaica and Humber COIL initiative enabled the faculties from both countries to co-create a technology enhanced learning environment to provide students with an authentic online intercultural experience while still achieving course learning objectives. Programme Director Mrs. Therrain Davis, who spearheaded the initiative from UTech, Ja. campus, explained that the initiative was geared towards enhancing the students’ competencies for participating productively and responsibly in a diverse international, intercultural, and interdependent world. The collaboration enabled students to gain knowledge in diversity, globalization, sustainable development, and social justice. Through the COIL initiative, students were taught values such as appreciation of human dignity, respect for people and things, the belief that people can make a difference and empathy towards other culture and viewpoints and curiosity about global issues and conditions that shape the lives of PWD’s (People with Disability). Student Mrs. Kelene Thomas-Barrant and Faculty member and Mrs. Claudette Wilmot were featured in the Humber Faculty of Social and Community Service Magazine (See features below). Faculty member from UTech, Ja. Mrs. Claudette Wilmot and Humber Faculties Mrs. Andrea Rutherford and Miss Loris Bennett delivered selected classroom lectures using online platforms. Classrooms from both campuses were joined for these selected lectures. Students from UTech, Ja. and Humber also engaged in shared graded assignments. The assignments that were completed by the students from both institutions will form the basis of a PHASE 2 of the COIL. This will take the form of implementation of the students’ suggestions/solutions at the Mustard Seed Centre at the UTech, Ja. Papine campus. Mrs. Carol Hutchinson, Centre Manager will spearhead PHASE 2 of the COIL initiative. This is scheduled to begin in Academic Year 2021/2022.
