VOICES Bi-Monthly Magazine of the University of Technology, Jamaica | September - December 2020 6 H uman capacity building in Information and Communications Technology (ICT) development was further strengthened with the launch of the Huawei’s Seeds for the Future-SKY 2020 programme which provided 12 students from the University of Technology, Jamaica and the University of the West Indies, Mona the opportunity to be immersed in the latest ICT advancements. The students selected for the programme participated in a five-day virtual learning experience in November with Huawei experts and were introduced to technologies such as artificial intelligence, 5G networking, and Huawei products and services. As part of the programme, students were also exposed to Chinese culture and customs. This year’s Huawei Seeds for the Future scholarship recipients from the School of Computing and Information Technology (SCIT) were Alecia Bailey, Alex Downer, Cassandru Bartley, Chadan Huggup and Dylan Lewis. Students of the University of Technology, Jamaica also benefitted from greater access to computer devices for remote learning, thanks to a donation of 100 Huawei Mediapad T5 tablets from Huawei Technologies, Jamaica Co. Ltd, which were handed over at a ceremony at the University’s Papine Campus on October 28, 2020. The donation follows from the partnership between the University and Huawei Technologies Jamaica established in 2017 to collaborate through the “Seeds for the Future” program.
