VOICES Bi-Monthly Magazine of the University of Technology, Jamaica | September - December 2020 10 H earty congratulations to Rowen Johnson, UTech, Jamaica alumnus on achieving the prestigious Guardian Group’s Scholarship for the United Nation’s University of Peace Global Leadership Diploma. The Guardian Group Global Leadership Diploma Scholarship programme is a unique partnership by the Guardian Group with the United Nations established University for Peace, through its Centre for Executive Education to offer 10 Global Leadership Diploma Scholarships across the region. The Scholarship is intended to provide opportunities for potential and emerging leaders in the Caribbean to fulfil their individual visions and goals of fostering positive change in the communities and environments in which they live. He currently operates his own business, Amaru Business Development, a business consultancy specializing in providing technical writing services to entrepreneurs and other individuals and entities seeking funding. For the past two years, he has also served as a member of the organising team of the ACRM Evening Institute, a community education programme serving the youth and adults within the neighbouring communities of UTech, Jamaica Papine Campus. As part of the application process for the scholarship, applicants were asked to submit an idea or existing project in which they are currently involved, demonstrating how this involvement will make a positive impact on society, particularly in the context of prevailing challenging times. Applicants also had to demonstrate their network of influence and the Sustainable Development Goal(s) that would be supported by their ideas. A confident Rowen who graduated in 2017 with the Bachelor of Science in Entrepreneurship offered by the Joan Duncan School of Entrepreneurship, Ethics and Leadership (JDSEEL) and who later worked for a year as Administrative Support in the School, explains that his submission spoke to his current work with the ACRM Evening Institute and “our desire, given the current pandemic, to transition to an online community education programme.” T he UTech Pharmacy Alumni (UPA) and its umbrella organisation, the Caribbean Institute of Pharmacy Policy Practice and Research (CIPPPAR) have continued their longstanding support to the University with the donation of $650,000 to the School of Pharmacy, College of Health Sciences. The contribution which is in partnership with the Pharmaceutical Society of Jamaica will go towards renovation of the School’s Sterile Technology Laboratory and to assist pharmacy students in need. The donation was presented to Acting President, Professor Colin Gyles on December 18, 2020 at the University’s Papine Campus by Ms. Alicia Smith, Chairman of the UTech Pharmacy Alumni and by Dr. Ellen Campbell-Grizzle, CD, Founding Convenor, CIPPPAR. Dean of the College of Health Sciences, Dr. Janet Campbell- Shelly thanked the alumni and CIPPAR for the continuous benevolence to students over the years and for on this occasion also contributing to renovating the Sterile Technology Lab – a fundamental part of the training infrastructure for pharmacy students, which she noted is much in need of repair.
