This very comprehensive and data rich report provides an update on the inaugural State of the Tropics 2014 Report. It explores social, economic and environmental indicators to answer the question – Is life getting better in the Tropics? The Archer and Jackson chapter, which appears on page 210, presents a case for adequate housing in the Caribbean and discusses progress in this area against the Sustainable Development Goals and New Urban Agenda. T he Faculty of The Built Environment streamed its COVID-19 FOBE Conference 2020, live on YouTube on May 10, 2020. Organized under the theme “Prevention A Yard: Built Environment Hope”, the Conference sought to foster discussion on the impact of the built environment on the spread and prevention of communicable diseases, as well as the management of other matters of public health. The Conference included fifteen-minute presentations from built environment and public health experts from the University, who looked at the social and economic impact of the built environment spaces on the pandemic, while positing possible solutions to issues of disease control and spread, through planning, public policy and built environment legislation. Dr. Garfield Young, Dean, Faculty of The Built Environment, indicated in his introductory remarks that the conference was designed to “ask questions, and to establish our positions as individuals and jointly about the relationship between how we design our urban and rural spaces, communities and the nature of our building stock and other physical infrastructure and how they impact on the spread of the Corona virus.” Presenters included Dr. Earl Bailey, Senior Lecturer, FOBE, Mr. Lebert Langley, Lecturer, FOBE, Dr. Amani Ishemo, Associate Professor, FOBE, Arch. Dr. Patricia Green, Senior Lecturer, FOBE, Mr. Laurence Neufville, Head of School, School of Building and Land Management, FOBE, Professor Carol Archer, Professor of Urban Planning and Public Policy, and Professor Winston Davidson, Professor of Public Health and Health Technology, School of Public Health and Health Technology. Arch. Dr. Patricia Green also served as the Conference’s chair.
