VOICES Bi-Monthly Magazine of the University of Technology, Jamaica | January – April 2020 24 Student Innovator Rayvon Stewart (foreground) proudly displays his innovation, XERMOSEL, accompanied by his advisors, Mr. Kirkland Rowe, Senior Lecturer, Faculty of Engineering and Computing and Miss Novelette Cooke, Lecturer, JDSEEL/Co-Chair, UTech, Jamaica Business Model Competition. Rayvon paid a courtesy call on Acting President, Professor Colin Gyles on April 15, 2020 at the Papine Campus, where he provided an update on the progress of the commercialization of his innovation. Rayvon was accompanied by his advisors, Miss Novelette Cooke, Lecturer, JDSEEL/Co-Chair, UTech, Jamaica Business Model Competition and Mr. Kirkland Rowe, Senior Lecturer, Faculty of Engineering and Computing. Professor Gyles extended his congratulations to Rayvon and pledged the support of the University in continuing to provide an enabling environment for young inventors, entrepreneurs and engineers to grow and to pursue opportunities for positive contributions to society. The Acting President expressed delight and commendation that Rayvon and his team have made an outstanding impact in positing solutions to the present challenging circumstances. UTech, Ja. Debaters Cleveland Tomlinson (right) President, UTech, Ja. Debating and Public Speaking Society and Ravonne Thomas-Matthews (left) brought home the championship trophy at the Burger King- JADE National Collegiate Debating Championship (NCDC), held at the UWI, Mona Western Campus in Montego Bay on February 26 and 27, 2020. The team won the semi-final match and advanced to the grand finals of the championship to push ahead of UWI, Mona and NCU to win the competition. The two speakers received medals, trophies, gift baskets, and a cash prize of $30, 000. Additionally, UTech, Jamaica’s Cleveland Tomlinson received the Best Debater award. Other institutions participating in the tournament were Moneague College, Heart Trust/NTA Garmex Academy, and Montego Bay Community College.
