Debaters Host Annual Patois Debate T he Faculty of Education and Liberal Studies in collaboration with the UTech Debating and Public Speaking Society (UDPSS) on April 4, 2019 hosted its annual Patois Debate at the Shared Facilities Building, Papine Campus. The motion “Da Ous ya wuda sopuot abbashan onggl ef di man we get di uman prignant agrii fi shi du it!” [This House Would Support abortion only in cases where the man who gets a woman pregnant agrees to it] was fiercely contested by debaters from UTech, Jamaica and from the University of the West Indies (UWI) Mona. The entire debate was held in Jamaican Creole, with four teams of two students from each university. The adjudication panel comprised Chief Judge, Mr. Roger Bent, Student Services and Development Manager, UWI, Mona and wing judges, Miss Rushana Jarrett, Administrative Support, Office of the Head, School of Humanities and Social Sciences, FELS and Mr. Valdimir Wallace, Data Analyst, Planning and Operations Division, UTech, Jamaica. The Chief Judge ruled in favour of the UTech, Jamaica Opening Government team as winners of the debating competition based on the fact that the position argued went unchallenged by the UWI Opening Opposition. Following the fiercely contested and exciting debating competition, which was watched by visiting high school students, members of UTech, Jamaica faculty, staff and students, the Chief Judge announced the winners as follows: • 1st place – UTech, Jamaica (Openin g Government) • 2nd place – UTech, Jamaica (Closing Government) • 3rd place - UWI, Mona Campus (Opening Government Opposition) • 4th place – UWI, Mona Campus (Closing Government Opposition) All four teams were presented with medals and gifts by Dr. Rohan Lewis, Dean, FELS, who moderated the British Parliamentary style debate. In his remarks, Dr. Lewis noted that the Patois Debate was established to create an appreciation for the language especially in the context of debating.
