Based on academic accomplishments and financial need, the four students shortlisted were awarded full scholarships. Tuition fees coupled with book grants and other much-needed supplies put the value of each scholarship at approximately $450,000. According to the Jamaica Observer, “the outstanding quartet made indelible impressions on the judging panel as they shared their passion for the culinary arts, their personal challenges and how they overcame them. The judging panel, headed by Observer Managing Director Julian Rogers and Jamaica Observer Table Talk Food Awards conceptualiser Novia McDonald- Whyte, was very pleased with the calibre of the shortlisted students.” The panel also consisted of UTech, Jamaica Director of Student Financing Garcia Green-McLennon, Scholarship Officer Pauline Madourie and Food and Service Management Programme Director Camille Jackson. S chool of Engineering, Faculty of Engineering and Computing Master’s students, Mr. Kevoy Smith and Mr. Shanroy Dennis participated in an 8 week internship at Diehl Metering in Germany from June 4 to July 30, 2019. The initiative was one of the outcomes of an Memorandum of Understanding signed by the University of Technology, Diehl Metering and the National Water Commission in October 2018. The agreement was developed by Mrs. Deryck Gibson, Chairman and CEO, Deryck A. Gibson Limited in partnership with Diehl Metering and FENC, UTech, Ja During the internship, UTech, Jamaica students were actively involved in projects and tasks in several engineering related areas such as production, hardware, foreign trade, research and development, quality, industrial engineering and customer solutions. They also participated in workshops and training in networking, internet of things, innovation, software development and metrology. Mrs. Margaret Christian, Special Projects & Training Manager, FENC, reports that two Master’s students are now involved in developing initiatives for the Faculty to provide training and commercial support for the smart water metres currently being rolled out by DIEHL for NWC Jamaica and later the wider Caribbean.
