VOICES Bi-Monthly Magazine of the University of Technology, Jamaica | August - September 2019 20 F ive outstanding University of Technology, Jamaica students were presented with the prestigious Huawei Technologies Limited “Seeds for the Future 2019” Scholarship Award at a presentation and send-off ceremony held in their honour on August 22, 2019 at the Jamaica Pegasus Hotel. They are 3rd year School of Computing and Information Technology (SCIT) high achievers, Ms. Racquel Bailey, Ms. Tuwanbe Morgan, Ms. Karla Bustamante, Ms. Tia Thomas, and Ms. Anna-Kay Smikle. They join five male students from the University of the West Indies, Mona who were also selected. “Seeds for the Future”, Huawei’s flagship international corporate social responsibility programme in China, now in its third year, is comprised of Cultural Experience and ICT Training. The UTech, Jamaica students are During the two week programme, the “Seeds for the Future” scholarship awardees visited the city of Beijing, for immersion into Chinese culture and participated in an intense ICT training at Huawei’s Shenzhen headquarters. Professor Nilza Aples, Dean of the Faculty of Engineering & Computing, UTech, Jamaica thanked Huawei Technologies for the company’s contribution to the international education of students through the Seeds for the Future Program. She congratulated the new recipients from both universities, noting, “The education of the engineer and the computer scientist to carry our industry forward needs to change. Our current students are a part of an initiation of Industry 4.0. They are part of a transformation regarding the way we make a product. The reality for countries like Jamaica is that our educational institutions need to find ways to be at the forefront in the advances in this industrial revolution. This opportunity given to our students is remarkable... and goes beyond what the classroom could offer, ” she said. Also wishing the students well on their journey were Senator the Hon. Fayval Williams, Minister of Science, Energy and Technology and His Excellency, Ambassador Tian Qi, China’s Ambassador to Jamaica.
