VOICES Bi-Monthly Magazine of the University of Technology, Jamaica | February - March 2019 16 “I see it as an opportunity for meeting so many interesting people. I am very excited. There is so much to learn from people and I am looking forward to the new experiences that will help my personal and professional development. Students should think of life at UTech, Jamaica as a holistic development because it develops you socially and academically.” Abbi-Gayle Woolery College of Business and Management (Western Campus) Course of Study: Bachelor of Business Administration In a recent vox pop students selected to participate in the UTech, Jamaica Student Ambassador programme were asked “ Why did you want to become a UTech, Jamaica Student Ambassador and what advice would you give to students to make the best of student life at the University”? See their responses below. “I chose to become a UTech, Jamaica Student Ambassador because I saw it as an opportunity to give service to my school. I saw it as a way to encourage other students to always strive to become something more than just being a normal student. My advice to students is that they should enjoy their experience here at UTech, Jamaica and to embrace everything as an opportunity; as a milestone of achievement to move forward. I would also say, every experience here is a lesson from which you can grow and we students and we have teachers who will help us along the way.” Alecia Bailey Faculty of Engineering and Computing Course of Study: Bachelor of Science in Computing and Information Technology “UTech, Jamaica is an institution that is student-centered and it provides students with the opportunity to learn, grow, develop and to reach his or her full potential as a valued member of society. UTech, Jamaica has done a lot for me and I wanted to be in a position where I can share brand UTech, Jamaica. UTech, Jamaica has aided in my holistic development – academic, social and spiritual development, and I have to let the entire nation and everyone I interface with know that UTech, Jamaica is the institution of choice to grow so that you can become a better citizen for Jamaica. My advice to students is to see UTech, Jamaica as a big cow with a lot of milk to offer – my advice is to drink all the milk possible so you can become better individuals. Get involved in academic activities, attend the academic forums, attend the academic seminars, learn how you can manage your modules effectively so that you pass with an excellent grade. Do not focus on academics only or just attend social functions. There are many clubs and societies on campus that aid in the social development of students.” Cleveland Tomlinson Faculty of Faculty of Education and Liberal Studies Course of Study: Bachelor of Communication Arts and Technology STUDENT VOICES “I decided to become a UTech, Jamaica Ambassador because my lecturers and peers ssaw it fit because some of the functions that we have to carry out currently as student ambassadors, I was carrying them out prior without the title. This has made it official where I can serve as an ambassador not just on the campus but I can go outside to encourage persons to come to UTech, Jamaica. There are several activities here a student could get involved with. I tell students to just get involved; become a part of a club if you can. Students should also network with persons outside of their Faculty so that they can have friends in different fields.” Dennis Palmer Faculty of Law Course of Study: Bachelor of Law
