VOICES Bi-Monthly Magazine of the University of Technology, Jamaica | October - December 2018 26 T he Co-operative Education Unit, Office and Teaching and Learning, hosted its annual Professional Development Seminar and Awards Ceremony under the theme “R.A.I.S.E I.T. with Co-op Ed” on September 27, 2018 at the Papine Campus. The ceremony acknowledged outstanding students for their excellence in service during their professional development, as well as participating companies who support our students in providing them with on the job experience. Dr Haldane Johnson, Associate Vice President, Teaching and Learning in his presentation highlighted that “after having undergone a Co-operative education placement, students are expected to have developed and honed skills and competency in communication, team building, problem solving, and critical thinking, among others. Dr. Paul Ivey, Associate Vice President, Graduate Studies, Research and Entrepreneurship, who represented University President, Professor Stephen Vasciannie, noted that “ at UTech, Jamaica cooperative education is an important dimension of teaching and learning.” He added that opportunities such as internships, work experience, practicum and mentorship all support our thrust in helping our senior students to transition into the world of work. Keynote speaker was Ms Gloria Ann Lindo, General Manager, Better Homes Real Estate Jamaica. She highlighted the importance of respect, integrity, team work and accountability in the workplace and reminded students that the work environment operates on systems, policies and procedures that they must abide by.
