VOICES Bi-Monthly Magazine of the University of Technology, Jamaica | October - December 2018 20 T he University of Pennsylvania, (UPENN) Philadelphia, USA and the University of Technology, Jamaica signed a Non-Disclosure Agreement (NDA) in November 2017 to form a multidisciplinary team to investigate rehabilitation after CVDs and stroke. The agreement related to the Haptic Theradrive program and equipment and the Rehab Cares robot gym of UPENN, being led by Professor Michelle Johnson and the Techno-therapy System for Stroke Rehabilitation of the University of Technology, Jamaica, being led by Professor Felix Akinladejo, Associate Dean, Graduate Studies and Research, Faculty of Engineering and Computing. The agreement has led to a programme that is currently providing third-year Engineering students with training in the basic elements of robotics with a focus on rehabilitative robotics in the Jamaican context. The programme will cover a number of technical topics to expose to the students to the principles of human centered design focusing on rehabilitative systems. A multidisciplinary team involving students from both campuses has been formed, with the goal of bringing both students together at the end of the programme. Recent Research & Publications Mr. Andray Lawrence eLearning Technologist, Office of Distance Learning Research paper titled, “An investigation into the use of Multi-biometric Technology for Securing Online Exams in Jamaican Universities: The Perception of Students and Administrators” presented at the 2018 LACCEI International Multi-Conference of Engineering, Education and Technology Conference held in Lima, Peru July 18 – 20, 2018. Mr. Rasheed Perry, Assistant Lecturer, College of Health Sciences and Lead Researcher Journal Publication titled, “Complementary Feeding in Jamaica: The Hidden Cost of Commercial Baby Foods,” co- authored with Mrs. Ava Simpson, Senior Lecturer, Dr. Christine Fray-Aiken, Associate Professor, Professor Fitzroy Henry, Professor of Nutrition, College of Health Sciences and Consultant Nutritionist, Ms. Deonne Caines. The research article was published in the Journal of Nutrition and Dietetics Practice, vol. 2(1) 2018. Mr. Ricardo Sandcroft Lecturer, Faculty of Law Research paper titled, “Reconsidering the Constitutionality of Mandatory Minimum Sentences for Children in Jamaica.” The article has been accepted for publication in the next issue of the University of Technology, Jamaica Journal of Arts, Science and Technology Vol. 12, No. 1, March 2019. UPENN and UTech, Jamaica in Robotics Training Collaboration Dr. Michelle Johnson, Assistant Professor of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at the University of Pennsylvania (UPENN), USA making her presentation on “Robot-Assisted Stroke Rehabilitation for Developed and Developing Countries,” during a lecture held October 23, 2018 at the FENC Conference Room, Papine Campus.
