25 August 2018 | VOICES Bi-Monthly Magazine of the University of Technology, Jamaica T he United States Agency for International Development (USAID)- funded Fi Wi Jamaica Project at the University of Technology, Jamaica hosted its 4th Ubuntu ‘Essence of Humanity’ Awards on Sunday, April 29, 2018 at the Knutsford Court Hotel in St. Andrew. The ceremony was the final activity for the three-year project, formally launched on August 19, 2015 with the main objective to expand a window of opportunity for the protection and promotion of human rights of targeted socially excluded and vulnerable members of the Jamaican population. The Ubuntu Awards honours Jamaican citizens, residents and organisations that have had unique, transformative and enduring influence on the way that Jamaican society values the most vulnerable. In this regard, honourees have demonstrated courage in standing up for the marginalised or socially excluded. Awardees The 2018 Awardees were presented in the three categories – Trophy, Citation and Certificate. Trophy Category • Oswald Morgan – After studying agriculture overseas for several years, Mr Morgan returned to Jamaica with a passion for the advancement of his country through local and community development. He has given outstanding service in both urban and rural communities. • Mary Durnelle Kyne – is a native of Kent, United Kingdom, with deep Jamaican connections. In her exemplary humanitarian work, she has gone beyond the call of duty to assist vulnerable groups. • Michelle Golding Hylton – A UTech, Jamaica alumna, has been involved in voluntary service with community and non-government organizations for more than 30 years. • Claudette Richardson-Pious - Co-founder and Executive Director of Children First, a non-profit organization dedicated to improving the lives of Jamaica’s street children. She has given exemplary humanitarian service for many years in rescuing at risk youth who would otherwise ‘drop-out’ of society.
