Voices Magazine Vol2 Issue 2

11 June 2018 | VOICES Bi-Monthly Magazine of the University of Technology, Jamaica D r Newsome’s loyalty and commitment to the University of Technology, Jamaica began in 1978 when he entered CAST as a student to complete the Land Surveying Certificate and Diploma courses. His early promise resulted in him being offered a post as lecturer in the Building Department immediately on graduation and in 1988 he was promoted to Senior Lecturer. Since then he has been integral in the development and advancement of the University and in particular the School of Building and Land Management. He has also been duly recognized not only for his distinguished work in his profession but for his scholarship in the fields of Land Surveying and Land Information Sciences. Dr Newsome’s contribution to education has been largely confined to UTech, Jamaica where he acted as Programme Director, Land Surveying Section in the Faculty of the Built Environment starting in 1990 and he is currently Programme Director for the Land Surveying &Geographic Information Sciences Division. There he has been credited with the development of several highly acclaimed Diploma and Degree programmes and acquired a reputation for challenging his students to achieve the highest level of excellence in the many courses he lectured and or the many research projects supervised. He has represented UTech Jamaica well on both the national and international scenes and through his prestigious professional alliances; he has created many beneficial opportunities for the University and its students. In this regard as well, he has solicited and received many valuable gifts and scholarships for the Faculty over the years and, through his instrumentality, UTech Jamaica has the distinction of having been placed on the world map as a Point of Measurement for Cadastral surveys carried out in Jamaica. A great sportsman, Dr Newsome is recognized throughout the University as much for his contribution to academics, as for his contribution to sports. An enthusiastic cricketer, life member and awardee of the Melbourne Cricket Club, he has over the years organized, managed and played on several successful (and not so successful) UTech cricket teams thus keeping that sport of gentlemen alive in the University. LONG SERVICE AWARDS 35 YEARS Chancellor, the Most Honourable Edward Seaga, ON, PC presents the citation for 35 years of long and devoted service to. Dr. Glendon Newsome, Lecturer, Faculty of The Built Environment. CITATION
