VOICES Bi-Monthly Magazine of the University of Technology, Jamaica | April 2018 8 T he Faculty of Science and Sport (FOSS) hosted the 8th annual Conference on Sport Sciences on April 13, 2018 under the theme “Sports for All.” The conference included a plenary lecture by Sports Medicine Consultant, Dr. Paul Wright. There was also scientific presentations broadly examining issues in inclusivity, health and medicine, sports facilities management, and a panel discussion with sporting pioneers Ed Barnes, Ali McNab, Dr. Dennis Johnson, Yolande Geddes-Hall, UTech student athlete, Michael Campbell, rugby player Marvin Thompson and budding FIFA Referee Stephanie-Dale Yee Sing. Sports Stalwarts FOSS honoured sports stalwarts for their contribution to sport and national development Sports Sciences Conference Highlights “Sports for All” Mr. Michael Ricketts, President, Jamaica Football Federation (JFF) presents the posthumous Sport Stalwart Award to Mr. Richard Anderson, son of the late Patrick “Pat” Anderson. The revered sportsman was honoured for excellence in cricket and football as both a player and leader in which he moulded the lives of many athletes. Dr. Kingsley Chin, Adjunct Professor of Clinical Biomedical Sciences, FOSS presents the citation for the Sport Stalwart Award to Mr. Bradley Stewart who was honoured for his life’s work as a football coach and mentor. He was also acknowledged for his selfless efforts in helping over 100 young talents to obtain scholarships to attend colleges in the United States. Dr. Kamilah Hylton, Dean, Presents the Sport Stalwart Award to Mr. Aldrick “Allie” McNab who was acknowledged as “the best football striker that Jamaica has ever produced and as one of the best gifts Jamaica has given to the world of football.” Dr. Paul Wright, Sports Medicine Consultant delivers the keynote address on the topic, “Sports and Character.” Dr. Wright emphasised the need to level the playing field in sports, where “integrity and winning are not mutually exclusive.” He stressed that the health and well-being of student athletes is far more important than winning.
