VOICES Bi-Monthly Magazine of the University of Technology, Jamaica | April 2018 28 U Tech, Jamaica led by the Career and Placement Unit hosted the Annual Career and Job Placement Fair on Friday, March 16, 2018, at the Alfred Sangster Auditorium under the theme “Advancing into the World of Work.” Fifty-one participating companies and organisations conducted interviews with final year students from across the University’s colleges and faculties. In her welcome at the Opening Ceremony, Mrs. Mercedes Deane, University Registrar told the gathering that “we are constantly innovating and making our students ready, not just for the job market, but to create jobs for themselves… so there is an entrepreneurial side to our methodology and our strategic focus.” Among the other speakers was Mr. Daniel Caron, Country Manager, Nestle, Jamaica who endorsed the Career and Job Placement Fair, noting that its value in assisting with strengthening leadership and professional skills. International student Eicy Babb from Trinidad and Tobago who is completing her studies in Architecture, shared that her experience at UTech, Jamaica has been both challenging and rewarding. She specially thanked her lecturers and classmates who were always very supportive. Afron Byam, who hails from St. Vincent and the Grenadines in his reflection, gave account of his determination to commence his studies in urban and regional planning at the University. He shared that his experience has been challenging but he has learnt the importance of determination, time management and effective leadership. Guest speaker was Mr. W. Dave Cameron, President, Cricket West Indies Inc. In his talk on leadership in the Caribbean region, Mr. Cameron shared that this is often confused with “management.” In emphasising the difference between the two, he said that while “management is the organization and control of people to achieve defined results, leadership is about motivation, guidance and influence that requires emotional intelligence, vision, patience and empathy.” He also noted that “leaders look and see what’s possible, not what will hinder success and then they create a vision to bring everyone with them to execute that vision.” Cont’d from page 27 ...
