VOICES Bi-Monthly Magazine of the University of Technology, Jamaica | April 2018 24 S tudents of the Faculty of Science and Sport (FOSS), University of Technology, Jamaica who achieved excellence in academics and sports were honoured at the Faculty’s 2nd Students’ Awards Ceremony on Thursday, February 22, 2018 at the Alfred Sangster Auditorium, Papine Campus. Awards were presented to outstanding students for the Academic Years 2015/2016 and 2016/2017 from its three schools – Caribbean School of Sport Sciences, School of Natural and Applied Science and the School of Mathematics and Statistics. Congratulating the awardees Dean, Dr. Kamilah Hylton urged the students to “continue digging deep, to think outside the box, overcome your fears and resolve to solve problems as these are the hallmarks of achieving excellence.” The Dean also thanked the faculty and staff, partner institution, Churches Teachers College and sponsors, the Statistical Institute of Jamaica, Reggae Jammins, Massey Technologies and MK Sports, noting their continued investment in the development of the Faculty and the success of its students. President, UTech, Jamaica, Professor Stephen Vasciannie had high commendations for the students who had achieved outstanding Grade Point Averages ranging from 3.0 to 3.45 and above. He noted that “I am pleased that the standards have been set high and that the bar of excellence set by the Faculty is in keeping with international standards of excellence of academic performance.” He told the students to not only strive for excellence in their academic courses of study but to strive for excellence in their deportment, integrity and conduct in all their undertakings. Guest speaker was Media Consultant Mr. Clyde McKenzie. In his motivational address he highlighted the importance of a positive attitude towards achieving excellence. He encouraged the students to be open to new ideas, to be strong in their beliefs, exercise good judgement at all times and to recognize the value of letting go of fears that hinder success. Faculty of Science and Sport CelebratesTopAchievers Dean’s Awardees for Academic Excellence: Dr. Kamilah Hylton (left), Dean, Faculty of Science and Sport, University of Technology, Jamaica presents the Dean’s Award for Academic Excellence to Mrs. Chloe Fruze-Russell (right), Bachelor of Science in Mathematics and Teaching student for the Academic Year 2015/16. Mrs. Russell achieved a Grade Point Average (GPA) of 3.78 and also copped the Mathematics and Education Outstanding Performance for Academic Years 2015/16 and 2016/17. At right, Bachelor of Science in Actuarial Science student, Mr. Lerol Rowe, accepts his award outstanding academic performance for the Academic Year 2016/2017 which he copped by achieving a GPA of 3.84. Mr. Rowe also received the awards for Most Outstanding Academic Performance in the BSc Actuarial Sciences for Academic Years 2015/16, 2016/17.
