VOICES Bi-Monthly Magazine of the University of Technology, Jamaica | February 2018 20 Nursing and Midwifery Students Earn Their Stripes U niversity of Technology, Jamaica students enrolled in years one to four of the BSc. in Nursing and the BSc. in Midwifery have earned their symbolic stripes having satisfied the academic and professional requirements of their respective levels of study. The Caribbean School of Nursing (CSON), College of Health Sciences, (COHS) presented over three hundred (300) students with their stripes at ceremonies held on Thursday, February 8, 2018 at the Christian Life Centre, Kingston and at the Calvary Baptist Church, Montego Bay on Thursday, February 15, 2018 for the Papine and Western Campuses respectively. Dr. Janet Campbell-Shelly, Dean, College of Health Sciences, UTech, Jamaica reminded the students that their striping also signifies that they have been empowered to take on a higher level of service in the profession. Head, Caribbean School of Nursing, Dr. Adella Campbell told the audience of students, faculty, staff, parents, well-wishers and members from the nursing fraternity that the School continues to excel academically. Dr. Campbell also noted that current fourth year nursing student, Miss Juline Souden, was awarded the First Runner-Up trophy in the 2016 LASCO/ NAJ Student Nurse of the Year competition. Mrs. Mercedes Deane, University Registrar charged the students to continue the pursuit of excellence in their profession through continuous training and the acquisition of new knowledge. Mrs. Carmen Johnson, President, Nurses Association of Jamaica who brought greetings to the nursing and midwifery students encouraged the students to work hard and to adhere to the values and standards of the nursing profession. Guest speaker, Mrs. Heather White, Health Services Manager, UTech, Jamaica addressed the students on the theme, “Nursing and Midwifery Students Striving for Excellence; Empowered to Serve.” DEAN’S LIST AWARDEES: B.Sc.
