Voices Magazine-Issue

15 February 2018 | VOICES Bi-Monthly Magazine of the University of Technology, Jamaica M s Sanchez Alcolea concluded that “traditional”, as well as more recent communicative approaches to the teaching of Spanish as a foreign language in Jamaica, do not give sufficient attention to the specificities of the language/linguistic context of the Jamaican student. Very little, if any, consideration is given to the fact that the linguistic skills of many Jamaican students are not English skills. Spanish is therefore taught on the assumption that English is the only language of all Jamaican students, and this misguided approach may account for some of the frustrations encountered in Spanish classes in Jamaica. She recommended that more attention should be given regarding the overall language situation in Jamaica to facilitate better understanding and best methodologies for teaching and learning of the Spanish language.
