The Jamaican students will join other Caribbean university students from Trinidad and Tobago and Guyana to participate in Huawei’s flagship international corporate social responsibility programme. Sharing in the happy moment are Mr. Logan Shi (back row, 2nd left), Huawei Country Manager for Jamaica, members of Faculty, Miss Karlene Black, (back row, 3rd left),Vice Dean, Faculty of Engineering and Computing, Dr. Sean Thorpe (back row, 4th left), Head, School of Computing and Information Technology, Dr. Noel Brown (right), Head School of Engineering and Dr. Claire Sutherland (3rd left), Senior Director, International and Institutional Linkages, UTech, Jamaica. “Seeds for the Future” is Huawei’s flagship Corporate Social Responsibility programme, designed to train and develop local talent in the ICT sector, through an ICT technical training internship at the company’s headquarters in Shenzhen, China, and Chinese culture immersion programme in China. The Huawei internship programme is designed to bridge the knowledge gap between the theory of the classroom and the practise of the professional world by providing training in emerging ICT technologies in the global telecommunications industry, while exposing students to Chinese language culture. Huawei Country Manager, Mr. Logan Shi in his remarks at the presentation ceremony noted that, “It is our most heavily invested corporate social responsibility programme,” adding that “Huawei launched the programme to nurture professionals who are urgently needed to drive the development of the ICT industry in countries where we operate.” UTech, Ja. Students Awarded Huawei Seeds For The Future Scholarships During the ceremony, Huawei Technologies Jamaica Company Ltd. signed a Memoranda of Understanding with each of the two participating universities in Jamaica – University of Technology, Jamaica and the University of the West Indies, Mona, to launch the Seeds for the Future corporate social responsibility programme in Jamaica. Through the MOU, UTech, Jamaica and Huawei Technologies will collaborate to identify and select, each year, the best students in its ICT and engineering technology programmes to participate in this internship programme at Huawei Headquarters in Shenzhen, China. Participating in the signing the MoUs from left are Professor Ishenkumba Kahwa, Deputy Principal, UWI, Mona, Mr. Logan Shi, Huawei Jamaica Country Manager and Dr. Claire Sutherland, Senior Director, International and Institutional Linkages, UTech, Jamaica.
