T H E UN I V E R S I T Y OF T E CHNO L OGY , J AMA I CA – ST UD E NT HANDBOOK 2024– 2025 172 In addition to meeting all other specified Uni- versity requirements for the granting of awards to students, graduate students are required to maintain a cumulative Grade Point Average (GPA) of at least 3.0 throughout the duration of their course of study to be in good academic standing. A graduate student failing to main- tain a cumulative GPA of at least 3.0 will be placed on academic probation for one semester immediately following the semester in which the failure to attain at least 3.0 occurred. If at the end of the period of academic probation the student’s cumulative GPA is still below 3.0, the student will be discontinued from the course of study. P OST-GR ADUATE C ERTIFIC ATE A postgraduate certificate is at the same level as a post-graduate diploma and generally post- graduate certificates are vocational in nature. At the University of Technology, Jamaica, this certificate requires successful completion of a minimum of 30 credits with or without out a limited research component. P OST-GR ADUATE D IPLOMA A postgraduate diploma is a shorter qualification than a master’s degree, although at the same academic level. At the University of Technology, Jamaica, this type of diploma requires successful completion of a minimum of 30 credits (24 credits of coursework and/or 6 credits of research). M ASTERS D EGREE This is an academic degree awarded by univer- sities or colleges upon completion of a course of study demonstrating mastery or a high-order overview of a specific field of study or area of professional practice. Master’s degrees at the University of Technology, Jamaica require suc- cessful completion of a minimum of 36 credits beyond the Bachelor’s degree. The credits are distributed among core modules (15–18 credits), specialization modules (12–15 credits), and a research project (6 credits). In some instances, the research project may be substituted with an equivalent number of credits of coursework. M ASTER OF PHI LOSOPHY The MPhil is regarded as an advanced master's degree standing before the Doctor of Philosophy. Undertaking a MPhil Degree involves: Critically investigating and evaluating an approved topic/problem; Demonstrating and understanding of research method (s) appropriate to ACADEMIC PROGRESS AND GRANTING OF AWARDS FOR GRADUATE STUDENTS
