Some of the duties undertaken by the intern were: data processing, graphic designing, research, customer service, filing, report writing and assisting on the Students’ Union led “Teach the Youth” Programme. Annual Community Service Conference & Fair 2019 - Papine Campus The Community Service Conference and Fair was held at the Alfred Sangster Auditorium, Papine Campus on August 22, 2019. This was done as a part of the university’s Week of Welcome (WOW) for new students. Students were exposed to information regarding their Community Service Programme (CSP 1001) module as well as provided with details of other outreach projects done by the university. The keynote speaker was Mr. Kimani Martin, Youth Ambassador of Citizen Security and Justice Programme (CSJP). Other presentations were made by the participating agency representatives that facilitated our university students in carrying out their CSP1001 hours, and students who previously participated in the programme spoke of their fulfilling experience while they served. As a part of the conference, the outstanding teacher and centre manager for the Students’ Union summer “Teach The Youth” programme were rewarded and Mr. Junior Bennett, lecturer from the Faculty of Engineering and Computing was also recognized for his exceptional contribution to community service on and off the campus. Partnering agencies for the conference included: The Diabetes Association of Jamaica (DAJ), Jamaica Society for the Blind, Caribbean Sustainable Energy and Innovative Centre (CSEII), Peace Corps, Jamaica Cancer Society, Liberty Hall, Mona Baptist Church, Institute of Jamaica Junior Centre, Jamaica Association against Cruelty to Animals, and the Mustard Seed Communities. Our main sponsor, Aim Financial Services provided pertinent information on their loan offerings and outlined the process by which students can apply for small loans. Other sponsors included The Dentist, Island Grill, Grace Kennedy Ltd. and Bigga Supermarket. Annual Community Service Conference and & Fair – Western Campus The orientation exercise at Dome Street, Montego Bay campus was held on Friday, August 24 with Mr. Paulton Gordon as the main speaker addressing the topic of “Volunteerism – A Civic Responsibility” while Mr. Courtney Palmer who was also in attendance gave an overview of the Community Service 1001 programme (CSP1001). Saturday University The Saturday University Outreach Programme was held September to December 2019. The Department continues to serve students mainly from the Papine communities. There were eighteen (18) volunteers on roll and over one hundred and eighteen (118) students in attendance. Four Empowerment Sessions were conducted which focused on topics such as - Safety and Security, Primary Exit Profile (PEP) Structure, Human Trafficking, Conflict Management and Values and Attitudes. In response to our sponsorship letters soliciting support to provide a meal for the students the following entities responded positively: Lasco Chin Foundation (water, drinks, corn beef and sausage) Caribbean Broilers (CB) Food for The Poor donated Rice food items which were used to prepare lunches for the last three weeks of classes. Semester two classes commenced on January 18 and ended prematurely on March 7 due to the Novel COVID 19 pandemic. The students’ attendance was approximately one hundred and fifty registered students on roll with support of eighteen volunteers with an average attendance of ninety-two. The Bank of Jamaica supported the programme through a donation of Three Hundred and Fifty Thousand Dollars ($350,000.00) which was used to provide lunches for students and volunteers. Papine Wellness Fest 2020 The Department of Community Service and Development continued to partner with the Social Development Commission (SDC) in planning and implementing the Papine Wellness Fest series of
