University of Technology, Jamaica 86 The Department of Community Service and Development continues to assist with the coordination of the CSP (1001) module and manages the relationship between the students and the institutions where they are placed to complete the 40 hours of volunteer engagement. Agencies’/Tutors’ Workshop 2019 The Department held its Annual Agencies/ CSP1001Tutors Workshop on May 29, 2019. It provided an opportunity for partner agencies to interface with tutors to share information on successes and identify areas that need improvement. Approximately fifty persons attended the workshop. National Labour Day Project 2019 On May 23 the Department partnered with Restaurants of Jamaica, and the Early Childhood Commission (ECC) in carrying out its National Labour Day Project at the National Water Commission (NWC) Basic School in Papine. The theme focused on “Safeguarding our children’s Future” with the tag line “Child Safety… It’s You, It’s Me, It’s All Ah We” for schools. Some of the major activities undertaken included creating a sidewalk leading into the school, clearing the open land adjacent to the school, fortifying the fencing around the school, painting, welding on the playground and other masonry work to help students feel safer in and around the premises. The project was made possible with the assistance of hardware stores in Papine, Caribbean Cement Company Limited, Restaurant of Jamaica through the KFC brand, the Student Union and various Faculties of UTech, Ja. that provided cash and/or kind. Multi-purpose Court at Carberry Court Special School The Department was invited by longstanding partner, Carberry Court Special School to the opening of its multi-purpose court. Mr. Paulton Gordon played an integral role in the initiation of the project as he proposed the construction of the Multi-purpose Court, with principal, Mrs. McDonald seizing the opportunity to bring the idea to fruition. The Carberry Court Special School is a special educational institution which caters to the needs of intellectually challenged students, ages 8 to 18 years. The multi-purpose court which was donated by the Sports Development Foundation (SDF)will facilitate more play time and sporting activities for the students. Girls Empowerment Camp The Girls Empowerment Camp was hosted by the Department of Community Service and Development from July 8 to July 18, 2019. Thirty-five (35) girls, aged 13 to 18 years attended the camp, from the communities of Standpipe, Goldsmith Villa, Kintyre, August Town, Highlight View, Hope Estate, and Land Lease. As part of the Department’s mission to engage youth through sports, netball was used as a tool to build camaraderie and team work among the communities. The sports and recreational sessions were facilitated by representatives from the Caribbean School of Sport Sciences, Faculty of Science and Sport. On a daily basis the girls were exposed to personal development sessions and career guidance. During the subsequent semester, a few of the girls were invited back on the campus for counseling sessions. Youth Crime Watch of Jamaica (YCWJ) through the National Integrity Action (NIA) provided funding for this initiative and the director was invited to share in one of the sessions. Tourism Product Development Company (TPDCo) Internship For the third year, the Community Service Department partnered with the Tourism Product Development Company in hosting the Spruce Up Jamaica Summer Internship Programme. The programme began on July 8 and ended on August 16. There were two intakes, cohort 1 and 2 which consisted of 29 and 22 interns respectively. The summer interns were deployed across several offices of the university. The aim of the programme is to mentor Jamaican youths through Division of Community Service and Development Cont’d.
