University of Technology, Jamaica 71 Faculty of Science and Sport Dr. Kamilah Hylton Dean • Caribbean School of Sport Sciences • School of Natural and Applied Science • School of Mathematics and Statistics • Centre for Science-Based Research and Continuing Studies • Department of Sport Special Events Annual Caribbean Conference on Sport Sciences The faculty through the Caribbean School of Sport Sciences hosted its Annual Caribbean Conference on Sport Sciences in April, 2019 under the theme Sport: Golden Opportunity for Development and Wealth Creation. The Keynote Speaker Mr. Chris Dehring, CEO at ReadyTV, Investment Banker and Sport Aficionado, spoke of the potential for income generation through sport with its associated impact on the economy using his example of hosting the Cricket World Cup in the Caribbean. He emphasized the need for a research-based outlook on evaluating and measuring the contribution of sport to the economy with the need for a sport policy to assist in this venture. Mr. Dehring recommended that the academics and other stakeholders find the data collected from the hosting of the Cricket World Cup in the Caribbean to analyse same for the benefits and put forward recommendations for improvement & hosting of other economically viable sport events. Another key takeaway from his address was the need to license sport events for wider viewership and the opportunity to earn more money from sport. Other speakers such as Olympian Juliet Cuthbert-Flynn, Sport Agent Norman Peart, Head of Tournament Services, Rugby League World Cup 2021 Mr. Dean Hardware, Mayberry Investments CEO Mr. Gary Peart, Orthodontist Dr. Anna Law and Sport Administrator Mr. Dalton Myers added to the wealth of information shared. Dean, Dr. Kamilah Hylton and Physiatrist Dr. Paula Dawson opened the eyes of the audience to the true healthcare costs for an athlete; the direct and hidden costs that administrators and athletes pay for their success. Safeguarding Children in Sport Workshop The Faculty through CSOSS in collaboration with the Jamaica Football Federation, CONCACAF and the JMMB Joan Duncan Foundation hosted a series of workshops for football coaches on safeguarding children in sport. The workshop was held under the theme “Safeguarding our Children in Sport for National Development”. The primary objective was to increase the awareness of football coaches on safeguarding children by providing them with the requisite knowledge to protect themselves and the athletes in their care as outlined by the curriculum developed by CONCACAF. The sessions were conducted by lecturers Mrs. Naheel Brown Legister and Mr. Laurence Garriques.
