University of Technology, Jamaica 68 FACULTY OF LAW Change in Matriculation Requirements At the Academic Board meeting held August 15, 2019, the Faculty of Law’s application for removal of Mathematics as a compulsory matriculation requirement was approved. The new matriculation requirement came into effect for the Academic Year 2019/20. Student Achievements Ms. Deon Foster, student in the Faculty of Law, represented the University as part of the University of Technology, Jamaica Debating and Public Speaking Society (UDPSS) at the 38th staging of the World Universities Debating Championship in Bangkok, Thailand from December 27, 2019 – January 4, 2020. Inter-American Human Rights Moot Court Competition The Faculty participated in the 2019 Inter-American Human Rights Moot Court Competition from May 19-24, 2019 in Washington, DC, USA. The team performed creditably. Ms Denise Allen, final year student, was commended by competition officials for her outstanding performance. The team was accompanied by Mr. Ricardo Sandcroft, Lecturer. Collaborations/International Linkages The Faculty partnered with UTech Ja. UNESCOUNEVOC Centre for Research and Sustainable Development on October 17, 2019 to host the International Day of Poverty Eradication. The conference was held in the Shared Facilities Building, Papine Campus. Dr Prathiba Mahanamahewa participated in a panel discussion organized by UTech, Ja and UWI (Open Campus) on October 31, 2019. The topic of discussion was “Harassment in the Workplace: Beyond Sexual Harassment”. Dr Mahanamahewa also presented a paper at the 2nd International Built Environment Conference “Sustainable Development in the Built Environment for National Growth” hosted by the Faculty of The Built Environment on November 7-8, 2019. The title of his paper was “A Critical Analysis of the Delay Claims in Construction Projects: The Case of Jamaica”. Ms Shanice Trowers attended the Association Internationale de Droit des Assurances (AIDA) Europe Conference in Lisbon, Portugal from October 1-5, 2019. She presented on the Marine Insurance Working Party Group on the potential legal and regulatory impacts of unmanned maritime vessels and how marine insurance Dr. Prathiba Mahanamahewa Dean
