Some of the services offered are examination and charting, back to school dental reports, scaling and root planning, dental prophylaxis and oral hygiene instructions. Oral health outreach activities were lower in the AY 2019/20 compared to previous years due to lack of sponsorship, increased material cost and lack of transportation for students and staff to visit outreach locations specifically outside of Kingston. It is estimated that more than 2,500 patients were treated at the outreach sessions. Sessions scheduled for March 2020 were cancelled due to the onset of the Covid-19 in February/March 2020. Throughout the year, over 300 students from eight schools visited the facilities at the College of Oral Health Sciences for educational tours and oral health services. At these tours, the Doctor of Medical Dentistry year three students make presentations to the students on topics specifically linked to oral health care. Students normally received small packages that are donated by Colgate Palmolive and Lasco Distributors. Below are some of the community outreach activities that the Joint Colleges participated in during the period: y Mrs. Roxann Brown-Wellington (Lecturer-SPHHT) and the year 2 Public Health Nursing students, had a dengue sensitization project in Trench Town at the Community Centre. The session was well supported as over One Hundred community members attended. y Mrs. Roxann Brown-Wellington heads the Health and Wellness Committee of the Gregory Park Baptist Church and is a member of the specially formulated COVID Leaders Committee. Both Committees see to the overall health and wellbeing of the church and surrounding communities. Programmes and/or contingency measures are put in place to mitigate and alleviate health problems and/or worsening of health conditions. y Dr. Mark Edwards in conjunction with overseas partners participated in a joint mission between the DMD year 4 students and the Northern Caribbean University (NCU) DH students at Cascade, St. Ann. y Dr. Edwards in conjunction with the Jamaica Dental Association, the DMD year 3, DH students of UTech, Jamaica and NCU participated in a joint mission during Oral Health month in October 2019 at the Girl’s Guide Headquarters. y Dr. Meleka Daley (Lecturer-ColOHS) and the DMD years 3 and 5 students participated in the Walkers Wood Dental Health Fair on February 20, 2020. The students completed mostly dental examination and cleaning. y On August 9, 2019, Ms Valrie McKenzie, Ms. Carla Gabbidon (Clinical Instructor) and students of the Dental Hygiene and Dental Assisting Courses of Study participated in a community outreach at the Trelawny Infirmary. y The Dental Hygiene and Doctor of Medical Dentistry students along with Dental Hygiene graduates in collaboration with the DMS Organization at the Tivoli Gardens High School provided dental service for the Kingston Power Plant Community Outreach Programme. Dental Care was provided to over One Hundred West Kingston residents. y Dr. Marcia Thelwell-Reid, along with Jamaica Association of Public Health Inspectors in a Diaspora Project in Mocho, Clarendon in June 2019. y Ms Valrie McKenzie participated in the Annual South East St. Catherine Information & Help Fair on August 15, 2019. Some of our past students provided cleaning and our Dental Assisting students also assisted at this event. Ms McKenzie also participated in the Dorcas Medical Mission in Frome, Westmoreland for a week in October 2019 along with students from the ColOHS. y Dr. Deon Bennett volunteered her service as a medical practitioner at Medical clinic at Hope Gospel Assembly, in Kingston in March 2020 and at the Soroptimist and Kiwanis combined Health Fair in April, 2020 at the College of Oral Health, Arthur Wint Drive.
