University of Technology, Jamaica 32 ACCOMMODATION UNIT Annual Halls of Residence Dinner& Awards Event On April 13, 2019, the resident life team hosted the annual Halls of Residence Dinner and Awards held in the Alfred Sangters Auditorium, under the theme “Push Through the Fire, Inspire and Climb Higher”. Guest speaker was Mr. Calbert Thomas, Prinicpal of Seaforth High School. A total of 35 students were awarded for outstanding contribution to sports, leadership, and academic excellence. Commendations on a job well done were extended from the Deputy President, Professor Colin Gyles, and Registrar, Mrs. Mercedes Deane to the the resident life team. Landlord Forum 2019 The Annual Landlord forum was held on July 18, 2019 at the Shared Facilities Building, Papine Campus, with 24 Landlords in attendance. The main speaker was Mr. Roger Bent, Student Services Manager, UWI, Mona whose address was on “Understanding Behavioural Patterns: A Systematic Approach to Students Conduct”. Other presenters included Miss Lisamae Gordon, Legal Counsel & Compliance Officer; who presented on the topic, “The Importance of Property Insurance for Boarders”, Mrs. Shenese Williams-Headlam, Director, Rent Assessment Board, who spoke on “Boarding or Renting…Is there a difference?”, and Mr. David Kelly, Director of Safety and Security Department who addressed “Safety and Security Measures for Commuting Students”. The evaluation of the forum was encouraging as the landlords indicated that the information was helpful and enlightening. Halls of Residence Students’ Leadership Retreat The Annual Student Leadership Retreat was held over the period May 6 - 10, 2019. The Halls of Residence Retreat began on May 4 and merged with the Annual Student Leadership Retreat. The Resident Students Leadership Retreat was held at the Papine Campus over a two-day period. The students were engaged on the topics: Managing Diversity; Public Speaking & Business Communication; Procurement & Administrative Processes; Planning Events & Meetings; and Managing Conflict., and practical implementation of the calendar of events. A total of 80 resident student leaders participated. Boarding Applications Figure 7: Comparative Analysis of Boarding Applications Received for 2019/2020 and 2020/2021 There is a 32.3% increase or 365 more applications for 2020/21 academic year when compared to the same period in 2019/20 academic year. Application period, closed for the 2020/21 academic year on February 28, 2020, in comparison to the 2019/2020 academic year which closed on March 29, 2019. Halls of Residence Welfare Programme As the financial needs of residents became more evident, the Unit has been steadfast with its Welfare Programme established in 2015/16 academic year. This programme was designed to assist as many financially challenged resident students as is possible, and is in collaboration with the University Welfare Programme. This initiative has aided inclusively over 100 residents. A total of 22 business entities were approached to partner in this venture for the academic year. Support was received from VMBS, Food for the Poor, and the Faculty of Science and Sport.
