UTech Annual Report 2019-20

University of Technology, Jamaica 29 Week of Welcome Programme, held August 18 – August 24, 2019 across the various campuses, under the theme “Unleashing the Knight in YOU”. The annual Academic Induction Ceremonies were held on August 22, 2019 at the St John’s Methodist, Montego Bay and on August 23, 2019 in the Alfred Sangster Auditorium, Papine Campus. New students were introduced to the University Council, members of the Executive Management team and other administrative and academic staff and a special welcome and charge from the president, Professor Stephen Vasciannie. IgKnight Leadership Programme The Department of Student Services in collaboration with the Victoria Mutual Foundation and National Tertiary Students’ Ministry (NTSM) hosted its Leadership and Empowerment Seminars for the second year on September 12, 2019 through to November 29, 2019. The programme was designed to empower and educate students in three disciplines: Personal Development, Leadership and Financial Literacy. The programme attracted 62 students with an average of 15 students per week. Over the duration, industry leaders and influencers shared insights into creating and establishing positive self-awareness, critical leadership skills and wealth management. Students who attended six or more sessions were presented with certificates of participation at the end of the programme. In addition, grants valued at J$25,000 each were given to three students: Harta-Lee Guthrie, Stephanie Allen, Sohlain Diah, Kimmone Green. The grants were courtesy of the Victoria Mutual Foundation. Graduation 2019 The Most Honourable Mrs Carla Seaga, widow of late Chancellor, the Most Honourable Edward Seaga, ON, PC, presents the inaugural Edward Seaga Award for Academic Excellence to Mignion Davis, a graduate of the Faculty of Engineering and Computing (FENC). Ms. Davis achieved a near perfect GPA of 3.74 out of a possible 4.00 and received First class honours in her Bachelor of Engineering in Mechanical Engineering degree. The University returned to the Papine campus to host its annual graduation ceremonies on Saturday, November 2, 2019 and Sunday, November 3, 2019. On November 2, 2019, approximately 400 graduates from the following Colleges/Faculties walked across the stage: Joint Colleges of Medicine, Oral Health and Veterinary Sciences, College of Health Sciences, Faculty of Engineering and Computing, Faculty of Law. On November 3, 2019, approximately 520 graduates from the following colleges/faculties were presented: College of Business and Management, Faculty of Science and Sport, Faculty of The Built Environment and Faculty of Education and Liberal Studies.
