University of Technology, Jamaica 25 Community Service and Outreach Social Development Commission (SDC) The University collaborated with the SDC in executing a Community Health Fair at the Dome Street location on Saturday, August 10, 2019. Alumni Association/Counselling Unit Welfare Initiative The UTech Alumni Association through its Knights Welfare Committee and the Counselling Unit reached out to needy students at the Western Campus. Students were gifted care packages consisting of a complement of grocery supplies. Five packages were received by the Western Campus’ Counsellor for distribution to the students. Vaccination Week In collaboration with the St. James Public Health Department on Wednesday April 24, 2019, vaccines were given to staff, students, and other stakeholders at the Western Campus 17 Dome Street. The vaccines given included Hepatitis B, Influenza, Polio Drops (OPV), Diphtheria and Tetanus (DT). A total of 34 persons were vaccinated. Cancer Awareness Presentation In recognition of World Cancer Day observed on February 4, 2020, a cancer awareness presentation was done by Nurse Todd and health educators from the St. James Public Health Department to staff and students on Monday, February 10, 2020. Sex Education Session Nurse Todd hosted a Sex Education Session on Thursday, September 19, 2019. The event was well supported by the targeted students, as they received vital information on their sexual and reproductive health. The topics covered included: Influences of family, peers, media, technology and other factors on sexually risky behaviour. The presenters included Community Peer Educators – Jodian Campbell and Kino-ray Cummings and Nurse Watson from the St. James Health Services along with Mrs. Susan Deegan-Crawford, Western Campus’ Counsellor and Ms. Shemari Todd, Nurse – Western Campus. MoBay City Run As beneficiaries of the annual MoBay City Run, part proceeds of $800,000 was donated to the Western Campus. The campus has been playing an active role in the planning and execution of the race. Students and staff participated in the race held on May 05, 2019. MoBay City Run donated $800,000 as part of its scholarship initiative to the campus. Health Fair The western arm of the UTech, Jamaica Medical Centre and the Students’ Union hosted a joint health fair on October 11, 2019. The invitation to share in this free Health Fair was extended to students and staff as well as residents in and around the surrounding area. The services offered included vital signs checks: temperature, pulse, respiration, blood pressure, blood glucose, height, weight and body mass index. Additionally, patrons benefitted from nutritional screening and health education, eye screening, HIV and Syphilis tests, pap smears, haemoglobin testing and cholesterol test. Approximately 150 persons were screened and benefitted from the health fair. Entities and sponsors who were on board included the National Health Fund (NHF), St. James Public Health Services, Recharge Distributors Ltd. (RDL), Broadbent Optical, Slam Condom and Hilton’s Pharmacy. School of Business Administration Seminar Students 2019/2020 The group donated $200,00.00 each to the West Haven Children’s Home and the Falmouth Infirmary as a part of their charity donation from fund raising activities.
