University of Technology, Jamaica 105 Staff Recognition The Forty-Ninth University Annual Awards Ceremony was held on May 30, 2019 under the theme “Celebrating Excellence in Service: Recognizing the Past, Rewarding the Present”. One hundred and seventy-nine employees were recognized for their service to the University ranging from ten years to forty-five years at the Ceremony. Special awards were also given to staff who had distinguished themselves in the areas of Research, Teaching, and in the Administrative, Ancillary and Technical categories. A special tribute was made to employees who passed away while serving during the year. Policies and Ordinances Throughout the year, the following policies have been reviewed and developed have been submitted for approval through the relevant committees. It is expected that these policies will be approved in the next period. 1. Study Leave and Financial Assistance Policy 2.Secondment Policy 3. Employment Policy and Procedures 4.Compensation and Benefits Policy 5. Private Practice Policy 6.Performance Appraisal Policy Industrial Relations Throughout the review period the industrial relations climate at the University was restive. The academic staff union UTASU took industrial action for nonpayment of retroactive funds owed to them. They have still yet to clarify their claims for the period 20172019. Negotiations were completed for the remaining three bargaining units for the period 2017-2019. Implementation on the agreed items also commenced. Environmental Heath During the reporting period, five (5) critical environmental parameters were consistently monitored on all campuses of the university. These include but were not necessarily limited to: Food safety & drinking water quality; pest infestation management; solid waste monitoring and management; environmental awareness and sensitization; swimming pool health and sanitation. Of the five environmental health parameters, food safety and water quality achieved and maintained high compliance. Medical Centre The Medical Centre continues to provide quality health care to the University Community. The team of health care professionals comprises of two (2) fulltime doctors and four (4) fulltime registered nurses as well as sessional /parttime doctors and nurses on the morning and evening shifts. Additionally, a Claims Assistant works alongside the team to manage health insurance claims and an Administrative Support provides assistance to the Health Services Manager. The Medical Centre operates from 8.00 a.m. – 8.00 p.m., Mondays to Fridays and 9.00 a.m. – 2.00 p.m. on Saturdays.
