Accredited by the University Council of Jamaica (UCJ) ANNUAL REPORT 2018-2019 University of Technology, Jamaica 85 of Prostate Cancer within the corporate area on August 31, 2018. Information on prostate cancer was distributed by students. 2018 International Coastal Clean up On September 15, 2018 the Department partnered with the Students’ Union and the Jamaica Environment Trust (JET) for the International Coastal Clean-up Day at the Palisados Go Kart Track. Approximately thirty students were participated. TPDCO Training/Coffee Festival The Department of Community Service & Development partnered with TPDCo for its annual Blue Mountain Coffee Festival held March 1- 3, 2019. The Department assisted with recruiting student volunteers from the Papine Campus. National Labour Day Project 2018 On May 23, 2018 the Department collaborated with the Students’ Union and members of staff to carry out a Labour Day Project with three schools which offers educational opportunities to children with disabilities. These were the Danny Williams School for Deaf: Painting of curb wall and planting foliage along fencing; Lister Mair Gilby: Building of ramp, and clearing of foliage along the corridor and Carberry Court: Painting of bathrooms, benches and recreational space. The team also cleaned drains and the roadway which provide access to all three schools. Representatives from the schools expressed their appreciation for the support. Papine Wellness Fest 2019 The Department of Community Service and Development continued to partner with the Social Development Commission (SDC) and Citizens Security and Justice Programme (CSJP) in planning and implementing the Papine Wellness Fest series of activities held from February 15 to April 3, 2019. Activities include health fairs, counselling sessions, legal advice and sports competitions. The activities were held in the communities of Gordon Town, Kintyre/Highlight View/Tavern, Brown’s Town, Gold Smith Villa and the Maryland/Irish Town. The Wellness Fest culminated with a grand concert in the Papine Park. The overall participation in the series was excellent and the community members expressed their gratitude for having the team serving their communities. Annual Community Service Conference and & Fair 2018 - Papine Campus The 18th Annual Community Service Conference & Fair was held on August 23, 2018 under the team “Pioneering Past; Bright Future”. Rev. Ronald Thwaites, Opposition Spokesman on Education/Co-Chair, Values & Attitudes was keynote speaker. He presented on “The Importance of Values and Attitudes to Nation Building”. Mr. Courtney Palmer, Lecturer/University CSP1001 Coordinator and Mr. Reginald Budhan, Ambassador Values & Attitudes & National Coordinator Respect Agenda Campaign gave an overview of the CSP1001 and Values and Attitudes respectively. Two of the UTech, Ja. past students shared their CSP1001 experiences with the audience after which the students were allowed to ask questions and offer comments. The main objectives of the conference included to create an awareness of the impact of service and volunteerism on the Jamaican society; to establish the link between values, attitudes and community service and the Jamaican society; To highlight the benefits, joys and learning opportunities of community service; to show the extent to which service is a part of the National Labour Day project.
