Accredited by the University Council of Jamaica (UCJ) ANNUAL REPORT 2018-2019 University of Technology, Jamaica 71 Fellowships • Dr. Collins-Fairclough won a research fellowship from the Canadian Government’s Emerging Leaders Programme (ELAP). She spent six months (December 2017 to June 2018) at the University of Waterloo, Canada where she worked on several aspects of her project which looks at the microbial biodiversity at the Riverton Landfill in Kingston. Jamaica. • Dr. Cecelia Waugh-Hall was selected to receive a scholarship to the 9th Edition of the WIPO-KIPO- KAIST-KIPA Advanced International Certificate Course (AICC) on IP Asset Management in Seoul, Republic of Korea, on October 23-26, 2018. She was selected from an international pool of qualified candidates to participate in the event. Her full participation is funded by WIPO. This Advanced International Certificate Course on IP Asset Management course is jointly offered by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), the Korean Intellectual Property Office (KIPO), the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST), and the Korea Invention Promotion Association (KIPA). Dr. Waugh-Hall’s entire trip is funded by the organisers and she left on Saturday, October 20, 2018 and returned Sunday, October 28, 2018. Community Service INVOCAB Project The European Union (EU) African, Caribbean, Pacific Science and Technology (ACP S&T II) funded project, titled “INVOCAB - Improving Innovation Capacities in the Caribbean” is a collaboration between the Scientific Research Council (SRC); National Institute of Higher Education, Science and Technology (NIHERST); Mico University College; Ministry of Education and UTech, J. This project was created to improve innovation in selected schools in the Caribbean through a targeted 16 primary and secondary schools, eight each in Trinidad and Tobago and Jamaica. Schools, once selected, would see, inter alia, the training of their science teachers, development and monitoring of science camps, development of science manuals, procurement of scientific equipment for their labs, visits to overseas institutions to observe teaching methods in science and technology, innovation competitions, the establishment of Science Centres at the MICO University College and Church Teachers’ College. Dr. Andrew Lamm has served as Senior Expert along with Mr. Rhoen Kerr (Mico University) and participated in various connected activities, including attendance at the Innovation Week at the University of Dresden, Germany; two summer camps; and two teacher training workshops. The INVOCAB project ended in 2018. National Service as Science Fair Judges Dr. Lamm served as Science Fair Judge at the National Science and Technology Fair held on June 12, 2018. This competition involved research projects from tertiary, secondary and primary education institutions across the island. It was conducted by the Scientific Research Council (SRC). Dr. Lamm and Ms. O’Sullivan were Science Fair Judges at the Jamaica Environment Trust’s (JET) School Environment Programme Research Competition held on June 18, 2018 at the Spanish Court Hotel.
